Will Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

475dfad05d813147a8c728f58f3212c0 Will Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

By now, everyone’s heard of Ed Sheeran. Or, at least, they should have. After releasing his ridiculously successful debut album, +, in 2011, winning two BRIT Awards for Best British Male and British Breakthrough Act in 2012, and collaborating with music heavyweights such as Taylor Swift, One Direction and Sir Elton John, it is an understatement to say that the guy has been on fire as of late (and it’s not because of bright red hair either). Thus, choosing Sheeran’s latest single “Sing” as our seventh and final Song of the Summer contestant felt like an absolute no-brainer.

Featured on his highly anticipated upcoming sophomore attempt, x, “Sing” definitely does not resemble Ed’s signature languid melodies and crooning mewl. Done in collaboration with the King Midas of Music Pharrell Williams, the track seems to have a bit of a Justin Timberlake influence with it’s upbeat guitar riffs and Sheeran’s flawless falsetto. No doubt, the song shows a different side of Ed who is, simply put, out on the prowl and just having a good time.

While “Sing” in itself is a sure-fire hit, it’s the music video that truly makes it come full circle. The video shows a Sheeran lookalike puppet that has a crazy night out on the town, stumbling into a karaoke bar and also partying with a gaggle of gals in a swanky white Hummer stretch limo. He then finds Sheeran and Pharrell in a film production studio, and the lads set off together into the night.

A little outlandish, but wildly entertaining, the video perfectly exudes not only the upbeat vibes of the song, but also the feeling of wild summer nights that we know you’ve all been craving.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, MTV just premiered a hour-long documentary, Nine Days And Nights Of Ed Sheeran, on June 10, highlighting the pop star’s humble beginnings, his incredible success and the fruition of “Sing,” which has already reached #1 on the UK singles chart.

“For me it’s a pleasure a work with him because he’s a freak of nature,” Pharrell says in the doc. “It’s interesting because he’s a singer-songwriter, and he kicking everybody’s ass. And now, he’s got them dancin’. Show me the last time that’s happened.”
