Happy Thanksgiving, Idolator readers! If you were celebrating, we hope your turkey day was fun and filling — and, hopefully, light on the family feuding.
Despite the slightly shorter holiday weekend, there was still plenty of action in pop land over the past few days. The 2013 American Music Awards got us all buzzin’ on Sunday — from Miley‘s giant cat to Lady Gaga and R. Kelly‘s Oval Office tryst. (Check out the full list of winners in case you missed ‘em!)
While One Direction dropped their third record Midnight Memories, Britney Spears unleashed her most personal album ever, Britney Jean, to iTunes. Justin Bieber gave us a taste of “All That Matters” music video. As always, you guys had plenty to say!
:: Jaime G. thought Sam’s review of 1D’s new album was spot-on on One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’: Album Review: “This is all extremely accurate. You did it again, Lansky.”
:: And Greg agreed that the new 1D was a delightful surprise on One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’ Headed For Number One With 500,000+ First Week Sales: “I actually quite liked this album. I’m not really a fan of the band in a sense that this is the first album of theirs that I’ve listened to all the way through….. but I will say they’re classy guys… and the music this time around is actually really decent.”
:: pedromateo was simply not having Gaga’s performance at the AMAs on American Music Awards 2013: Watch All The Performances: “Gaga / Kelly as Marilyn Monroe & JFK? Um…???????? The performance was silly / trite and the choreography was basic at best. (Not to mention the whole set-up was pretty tasteless on the anniversary week of JFK’s assassination.) Once again, Gaga takes something iconic and trivializes it by making it all about her (which seems to be her calling card now with all of her artistic “references.”) So sad….she was actually pretty interesting when she came out with her first album.”
:: Norwester took issue with the term “icon” on American Music Awards 2013: Review Revue: “I thought Timberlake deserved his awards; he’s an incredible showman. I mainly took issue with a young girl (Rhianna) getting an Icon award when there are performers out there who have done so much more and have been around longer. It was refreshing too to see some of the female artists actually wearing nice things that left a little more to the imagination for a change – some very classy gowns on that stage last night.”
:: anne‘s pure eyes were unable to handle the smut on stage on American Music Awards 2013: The Best & Worst Moments From The Show: “If you think filth is entertaining, I guess the AMAs were OK. If you actually like music?—-not so much.”
:: While drew felt cheated by the TLC reunion: “I told you TLC would bring out Lil’ Mama. And I fully expect a public apology for whatever that was that she did.”
:: XadaX thought justice was served for Xtina on Christina Aguilera & A Great Big World And Ke$ha & Pitbull Climb iTunes Post-AMAs: “Karma is a bitch #JusticeForBionic”
:: Nanger found love with Britney’s bonus track on Britney Spears’ “Now That I Found You”: Listen To The Quirky ‘Britney Jean’ Bonus Track: “I think Now That I Found You is the best track off Britney Jean. It’s very Britney, with a taste of new and old music. And a bit of country (trandy genre in pop/electro music nowadays thanks to Avicii and then Pitbull). I don’t get how come it didn’t make it to the standard album and it’s a bonus. It’s way more ‘personal’ than most of the standard tracks. Anyways, love the music, love the lyrics, love the beats. And although it’s almost impossible, I have some hope of it becoming a single and being in the Piece Of Me setlist.”
:: Pinky was impressed with Britney Jean on Britney Spears’ ‘Britney Jean’: Stream The Full Album: “Britney always manages to change it with every album, I personally think this album is better than her previous, it’s more voice, less robot.”
:: While John couldn’t find the love: “I can’t believe after her last four albums, all of which were GOLD (ok, Circus was silver), that her name is on this project. As a huge fan, I’m angry. The only obvious hit is “Passenger,” but I do love “Alien.” The thing is, it doesn’t seem personal at all. She has a writing credit on a song that we know was a demo for GRL and none of the lyrics were changed. This is, without a doubt, the worst album of her career. I’m going to go off and play “When Your Eyes Say It” and enjoy it more than pretty much everything except for the two songs mentioned and the singles on this album. I do love “When Your Eyes Say It,” though. Such an underrated gem. My feelings run so deep. Here’s to hoping the bonus tracks are better!”
:: And jamison wasn’t feeling it either: “I can see how it’s a more personal album (for britney at least) but for such a legendary artist this is a disappointment. will.i.am is horrid, and most of the tracks are just plain lackluster. it’s not all bad though, Alien, Tik Tik Boom, & Til It’s Gone are great. (even the jamie lynn song ain’t half bad).”
:: And finally, Harlan summarized the Gaga/Muppets Thanksgiving Special quite succinctly on ‘Lady Gaga & The Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular’: Watch Cameos By Elton John, RuPaul & More: “Two words to describe: strange & bizarre!”
