What a week it’s been for pop music! Saturday brought up an unexpected leak of Katy Perry‘s lead single “Roar,” while the leak of Lady Gaga‘s “Applause” came on Monday. Our comment sections have been on fire with comments from fans, haters, lovers, and friends–all with an opinion on the two divas’ latest efforts.
Justin Timberlake unveiled the tracklisting to his up-and-coming follow-up to The 20/20 Experience. In addition to a new album next month, Timberlake will perform at the VMAs on August 25 and will receive one of the night’s biggest honors–the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Speaking of the VMAs, the award show is just one week away and the line-up is turning out to be one for the books–Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been confirmed as performers.
But that’s not all! We finally got the release date for Miley’s highly-anticipated BANGERZ (out Oct 8). We had music video premieres galore with new clips from Zendaya, Rock Mafia, and The Wanted. Last but not least, Justin Bieber shot a music video and took nude pictures with a strategically-placed guitar. What a week!
Check out some of the week’s best comments below!
:: When we asked why Lady Gaga was in such a hurry in this week’s Caption This, Og Omanga had his mind on the competition when he said “It’s a pop music emergency! Can’t let Katy Perry hit number one before I do!”
:: A lawsuit is heating up between Robin Thicke and the estate of Marvin Gaye, with accusations that Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” beat might sound a little too similar to Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.” Fastnbulbous stated their thoughts on the matter on “Blurred Lines” Copyright Fight: Robin Thicke, Pharrell & T.I. Sue Marvin Gaye Estate: “It’s clearly an homage to the Gaye song, but so what? If anyone could sue for paying tribute to an overall sound or feel, then Zep/Sabbath/Purple/Priest would rake it in, and James Brown and Chuck Berry could sue nearly everyone else.”
:: Selena Gomez kicked off her Stars Dance Tour on Wednesday in Vancouver with a set list that includes an unexpected cover of Lorde‘s “Royals.” The cover got mixed reviews, with a more harsh opinion from meagain on Selena Gomez Covers Lorde’s “Royals”: Hear The Live Rendition: “I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies > I can make the stars dance, dance, dance for you, you, you. So gomez covered this clearly not realising that she is the epitomy of what lorde complains about it the song. the only part she really gets is probably, ‘let me be your ruler you can me queen b and baby i’ll rule.’”
:: The debut of Katy Perry‘s Prism lead single had Simone G singing praises on Katy Perry’s “Roar” Leaks: Listen To The Foot-Stomping ‘Prism’ Anthem: “Fcking gorgeous melody. “Firework” made me want to vomit, so naturally, I wasn’t looking forward to something “uplifting” from her, but I just love this. The chorus is epic, and I love the juxtaposition of the shotgun hip-pop beats and lullaby-esque pianos in the verses…so Lily Allen.”
:: Not everyone was happy with Katy’s “Roar,” robfuzz was less than enthused on Katy Perry’s “Roar” Leaks: Listen To The Foot-Stomping ‘Prism’ Anthem: “First off any song that has “eye of a tiger” in the lyrics gets the Velveeta Lyrics award from me. I agree this one sounds way too similar to Bareilles’ “Brave” and comes up the weaker one. I’d rather go listen to “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson.”
:: One Direction fans came to the rescue and defended their Teen Choice Awards performance where we felt the Brits looked”a bit like a pack of deer caught in headlights at certain points.” Makaley had a lot to say on Teen Choice Awards 2013: One Direction Give Debut Performance Of “Best Song Ever” (Watch): Ok…… THEY DID FREAKING AMAZING FOR BEING ON TOUR ALL SUMMER, NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES FOR A FEW MONTHS, NEVER LIVING IN AN ACTUAL HOME, RATHER A BUS, AND NOT TO MENTION BEING EXHAUSTED. It’s hard to hear yourself singing with 50,000 freaking people screaming your ears off and I think that they AMAZING considering all of this. Stop down talking them, I’d like to see you try doing what they do, it’s extremely hard to sing with 4 other people singing completely different parts than you………. You’d get bood off the stage if you tried.”
:: The debut of Lady Gaga‘s “Applause” left feeling mostly underwhelmed on Lady Gaga’s “Applause”: Review Revue: “I just heard it this morning and it definitely wasn’t love at first listen….seems very disjointed, definitely not a song you can sing along to…Judas has similar undesirable qualities but at least it had the catchy chorus…I don’t think this will be a song that will “grow” on me”
:: After dropping “Royals” as her first single, we won’t have to wait much longer to hear new music from Lorde, as her album’s out September 30. BP sang praises to the singer’s star potential on Lorde Unveils ‘Pure Heroine’ Tracklist & Album Art, Remains Cooler Than You: “‘Royals” and “Tennis Court” are her two swaggiest tracks, so I’m interested to hear the rest of the album. She’s also a year younger than me, and her impending stardom means all my anxiety about never accomplishing anything is coming true. I’m not bitter because she gifted us with “Royals,” the best pop song in a long while.”
:: Katy Perry and Lady Gaga heated up the iTunes chart this week with their latest singles. However, the victor of the two went to Katy, who held the top spot all week in the United States iTunes store. In a sea of Little Monsters and bickering haters, poshbrian had a very diplomatic view on Lady Gaga To Monsters: “Applause” Is Not Flopping: “Why is this such a surprise? Katy’s last album sold more, she has more number ones and has sold more singles. This is par for the course. Both are amazing artist that make their fans happy. Why is this news?”
