For her Saturday Night Live opening monologue tonight (November 16), Lady Gaga cleverly explained the difference between real applause and cheap “pandering” applause. The latter is the auto-response type of clapping you’d get when hosting New York City-based SNL and saying “Give it up for New York City!” or something like that. To demonstrate, Mother Monster then broke into a cabaret version of ARTPOP lead single “Applause,” changing the chorus to ”I live for cheap applause” and mining for equally easy claps. It was amusing and fun, plus it enabled Gaga to show off her chops to any holdouts.
Oh, and she also worked in a “tuck” joke referencing that one pesky old rumor. Check it out up top.
