CHVRCHES charmed pop fans with the release of their utterly magnetic debut album The Bones Of What You Believe last week, and the Scottish trio stopped by the UK’s Later… with Jools Holland to convert any remaining unbelievers. To do it, the band dug up the ever-reliable first pair of songs they ever released: “Lies” and “The Mother We Share.” Both tracks appear on the debut, and both sound just as vital today as they did the first time we heard them in late 2012.
While we would’ve liked to see them shake things up with a performance of a new track (“We Sink” next, please!), it’s hard to complain about this showing. The three members were nothing but dialed in, re-creating their synthetic soundscapes with a scientist’s precision. (And isn’t nice when a TV performance has a mix that doesn’t sound like it’s coming out of a shed with aluminum siding?!)
Catch the effervescent “Mother” up top, and the squelchy “Lies” below.
