Lana Del Rey’s ‘Ultraviolence’: 8 Things We Know So Far

ddfaac659949f39d277ba7bc02c55e48 Lana Del Rey’s ‘Ultraviolence’: 8 Things We Know So Far

Even with her tour underway, one of two Coachella sets done and “West Coast” out, Lana Del Rey has somehow managed to keep the details of Ultraviolence under wraps. It’s no small feat for a major pop star these days — especially one who’s as prone to leaks as Lana is. A big reveal can’t be too far off, but to hold fans over until she drops another vague bombshell on Twitter or Instagram, we’ve combed through all the scraps of information that have been floating around for the past year or so and compiled a handy list of the eight things we know about Ultraviolence so far.

Head below for an idea of what we can expect from LDR’s highly anticipated new album.

1. It’s dark
Lana deploys sadness as a capital-V Vibe better than almost anyone in pop, yet she always couches it with a certain dreamy quality — but perhaps that dreamy sheen will be stripped away on Ultraviolence. Unless this is a case of Katy Perry ditching the darkness at the last minute, Ultraviolence is shaping up to be a morose affair, as Lana revealed during a Twitter Q&A in January, “It’s so wrong and exquisite… It is absolutely gorgeous — darker then the first — so dark it’s almost unlistenable and wrong.”

“West Coast” certainly evoked a smokier, seedier vibe than her elegantly wasted persona of Born To Die/Paradise, but “dark” and “unlistenable” is all relative in the pop world. Yeezus this is not.

Speaking of…

2. It’s spiritual
Last February, she said for this album she “moved on to a more spiritual place lyrically.” We’re not sure how she can get any more spiritual than singing “Jesus is my bestest friend” and depicting Eve in Tropico, but apparently all that biblical fare didn’t sate Lana’s divine hunger.

3. It will be out very soon
This is yet another bit of news from the pouty lips of Lana herself. In February while signing autographs for fans, she replied to one who asked about the album’s release, saying “It’s coming out soon, May 1.” Luckily, the reveal was caught on camera, but there’s been a suspicious silence from her camp following that reveal. To be honest, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ultraviolence turned out to be that top secret Beyonce-style iTunes release that everyone’s been whispering about.

4. The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach headed production
After Lana tweeted, “Me and Dan Auerbach are excited to present you Ultraviolence,” Revolt TV confirmed that the winner of 2013′s Producer Of The Year Grammy was behind the boards for Lana’s project. In addition, the official press release for “West Coast” names Auerbach as the song’s producer.

This also means that…

5. It was recorded in Nashville
Or some of it, at least. Auerbach is based out of Nashville, and Del Rey was spotted there at the beginning of the year, which adds another layer to this being a new era separate from the gloomy L.A. glamour on her two prior releases. Again, the “West Coast” presser confirmed that that song was recorded in Nashville.

6. “Meet Me In The Pale Moonlight” is definitely not on it
After the disco-tinged track hit the Web, Lana was quick to clarify that the song was four years old, and that she wrote it for someone else.

7. Leaks may have caused her to tweak the tracklist
“Black Beauty” was the first song Lana mentioned for her new album, and a demo of it leaked soon after. Then another song leaked. And another. And on and on, until LDR had to address the leaks, saying that some of the songs were indeed intended for the new LP.

“I do feel discouraged, yeah. I don’t really know what to put on the record. But I guess I could just put them on and see what happens,” she told Radio.com, adding that she even slowed down her work on the record “’cause my life is like completely invaded.” So the fate of “Black Beauty” is still unknown.

8. Cigarettes are a motif
Lana sings about burning Parliaments in “West Coast,” the album’s billboards show her lighting up a cig and she even smoked a butt during her Coachella set. Probably something about the inherently cool appeal of nihilism. Or maybe she just has a habit.

Mary J. Blige delighted fans at Coachella when she joined Disclosure to perform her version of “F for You,” off the UK duo’s 2013 debut Settle. Blige was hardly the only guest during the set, as young critical darlings Alunageorge and Sam Smith popped up as well — but she inspired the loudest cheers of all, while belting her verses and jumping in stilettos (!) to keep the crowd hyped.

Blige approached Disclosure after the May release of Settle, a set that already sounded like a long-lost album from Tommy Boy‘s ’90s dance music roster. (Blige’s cameo only adds to that comparison.) “We said, ‘Sure, whatever you want,’” Disclosure’s Howard Lawrence said to Billboard. “She wanted to sing a new verse, so she sent us hundreds of vocals she thought might work. We sifted through them and had a great time.”

Watch Alunageorge and Blige crash Disclosure’s set after the jump.

“Cruise on, motherfuckers,” Blondie‘s Debbie Harry said at Coachella, while on stage during Arcade Fire‘s headlining set – one of the biggest surprises of the festival’s third day.

Harry joined the Montreal band on stage to duet with vocalist Regine Chassagne for Blondie’s 1978 hit “Heart of Glass,” then provide backup vocals for Arcade Fire’s “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains),” off its 2010 LP The Suburbs. While Chassagne appeared intimidated by Harry at first, and Harry seemed unfamiliar with the lyrics to “Sprawl II,” the two were also clearly stoked to perform together. (“Debbie motherfucking Harry,” frontman Win Butler later said.) It’s a good thing too, because for Arcade Fire fans in particular, the match-up was inevitable.

When The Suburbs initially dropped, critics immediately compared “Sprawl II” to “Heart of Glass” while calling it an album highlight. Chicago duo The Hood Internet then released a mash-up called “Sprawl of Glass,” still years before. On their U.S. dates leading up to Coachella, Arcade Fire would cover “Heart of Glass” live. Watch Blondie and Arcade Fire team up at Coachella up top, then hear the Hood Internet’s mash-up and Arcade Fire’s live cover after the jump.

The wait is nearly over for Sky Ferreira‘s full visual for her latest Night Time, My Time single “I Blame Myself,” which is now scheduled to premiere this Wednesday, April 16, through a collaborative video series by online retailer SSENSE and the print publication System. The clip was shot entirely in Los Angeles.

During our interview with Ferreira last week, she told us the following about her “I Blame Myself” video: “I can’t really give too many details about it yet, but I shot it in L.A. with Grant Singer, who does all my other videos. And my family’s in it.”

In the above teaser clip, we see Sky wearing shorts while singing in a graffiti-riddled alleyway and sitting in a red car while donning a sheer top. Give it a watch.

Ed Sheeran Announces North America Arena Tour: See The Dates

b46611c8943dfa4d2e3d4fbdfad47639 Ed Sheeran Announces North America Arena Tour: See The Dates

From Saturday Night Live to a stadium near you: Ed Sheeran has announced his first-ever headlining arena tour of North America, to follow the June 23 release of his sophomore LP x. The tour starts August 22 in Seattle and wraps September 18 in Toronto, though more dates are to come.

Sheeran’s tour fulfills a goal that he recently disclosed when talking about x and three sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden, a feat for any solo singer-songwriter – “I want to headline a stadium,” as he told Billboard. (Previously, he held the opening slot for Taylor Swift‘s Red Tour.) Meanwhile, on April 12 on SNL, Sheeran previewed how x would sound live by performing lead single “Sing” and a new song called “Don’t.” Both songs show that he’s beefed up his acoustic folk-meets-hip-hop roots, the former being produced by Pharrell and the latter channeling one of Pharrell’s key influences, new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley (Blackstreet, Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson‘s Dangerous).

Pre-sale tickets for Sheeran’s stops in Toronto, Boston and Chicago go on sale on April 22, while other dates are available starting April 25. See the full list of tour dates after the jump.

Jennifer Hudson And Timbaland’s “Walk It Out”: Listen To The Smooth & Soulful Slow Jam

b71269d465dfc5e35474efe9c1b6153d Jennifer Hudson And Timbaland’s “Walk It Out”: Listen To The Smooth & Soulful Slow Jam

For her follow-up to 2011 sophomore LP I Remember Me, Jennifer Hudson is said to be working with Pharrell Williams (of course), R. Kelly (projectile vomit into a bucket of piss) and Timbaland (nice one). The first hint at what’s to come is the new Timbo callab “Walk It Out,” which clocks in at nearly five minutes long. (If you’re at all familiar with Justin Timberlake‘s recent output, then you’ll know this is actually a short run time for a Timbaland production these days.)

The track is a beautifully smooth and sexy slow jam that mashes some old-school Philly soul vibes with a modern-day R&B sensibility. And it’s got Timbland chiming in with a barrage of ad-libs, hence, we guess, his “featuring” credit. That said, “Walk It Out” isn’t the most obvious choice of lead-single material as we head toward radio’s sure-to-be busy summer.

Give J-Hud and Timbaland’s pair-up a listen below.

OneRepublic’s “Love Runs Out” Sounds Like Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” & Adele’s “Rumour Has It”: Listen

3b372792abe2cd44d6973051d9ad217f OneRepublic’s “Love Runs Out” Sounds Like Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” & Adele’s “Rumour Has It”: Listen

Durable, Ryan Tedder-led pop outfit OneRepublic surprised fans today by re-releasing their third LP Native, which comes repacked with a few new tracks — chief among them: new single “Love Runs Out,” “Life In Color” and the Alesso vs. OneRepublic Remix of “If I Lose Myself.”

Last week a short snippet was made available for “Love Runs Out,” a song Tedder had apparently been kicking around for awhile, but ultimately discarded before the original version of Native was released last year, because the chorus didn’t come together just right. The tune now has said chorus, and, to be honest, it sounds mighty similar to that of Kanye West‘s 808s & Heartbreak smash “Love Lockdown.” Another past hit single “Love Runs Out” is reminiscent of: Adele‘s “Rumour Has It”…though, we’ll give Tedder a pass on that since he produced and co-wrote it. (There’s also the whole ’70s-era Rolling Stones rock & soul vibe that everyone seems to be jumping all over these days, but I digress.)

Compare OneRepublic’s new song to Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” and Adele’s “Rumour Has It” below, and see if your love for the band is locked down or just plain running out.

Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast”: Review Revue

742c4f06da5380e702f8e6ebfe22ff34 Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast”: Review Revue

Lana Del Rey‘s “West Coast” dropped today (April 14), and the lead single off Ultraviolence keeps Lana’s feet firmly planted in retro territory. But instead of channeling some warped hip-pop version of ’50s glamour, it has a seedier, vaguely psychedelic ’60s vibe. Producer Dan Auerbach eschewed a swollen orchestral arrangement in favor of some lean, analog noir, while Lana sings about smoking and loving and leaving, alternating between a husky whisper and a heavenly coo. It’s equal parts sullen and dreamy, which means its classic Lana — with some new tricks. Oh, and it’s pretty great.

So what did everyone else have to say about the new track? Head below for our roundup of reactions to “West Coast.”

:: SPIN argued the song conjured “images from a sort of Madison Avenue Manifest Destiny — silver starlets, lit Parliaments, rock’n’roll.”

:: Vulture connected the dots thusly: “Mix some ‘Edge of Seventeen’ (‘Ooh baby, ooh baby’) with an outtake from a Quentin Tarantino movie soundtrack, layer a signature lyrical style over that (‘Their golden cars and rock-n-roll groupies’), and you’ve got Lana Del Rey’s new single.

:: Billboard called it a “surprisingly breezy, guitar-driven track” and “less overtly moody than her previous work.”

:: The Guardian noted “the track oozes with the sultry sounds and textures of 80s drive time, based around a solitary guitar and anxiously breathy vocals.”

:: Our own Bradley Stern at MuuMuuse felt it marks “a fairly bold evolution in sound: The tempo shifts frequently, the instrumentation is jagged, and Lana’s voice skips between breathy franticness and slurred, drugged-out ecstasy.”

:: Radio.com labeled it a “slinky, breathy ode to a boy and the western seaboard of the United States… the song pretty much stays in Del Rey’s melancholic lane.”

:: FACT Magazine may have had the most interesting reference point for the song: “We reckon it sounds a teeny bit like The Cardigans, which as far as FACT staffers are concerned is a very fine thing indeed.”

What do you think of Lana’s return? Let us know in the comments below.

Robyn & Röyksopp Announce ‘Do It Again’ Mini-Album: Hear A Preview

a44e67bce891341361681e150ecbb52e Robyn & Röyksopp Announce ‘Do It Again’ Mini Album: Hear A Preview

Robyn and Röyksopp are heading out on tour together starting in June, and as they promised back in December, they’ve been working on new material leading up to the shows. Today (April 14), the Scandinavian acts announced they’ve teamed up for Do It Again, a five-track mini-album set for a May 26 release.

“I’ve been going back and forth to Bergen to record and write with the Röyksopp boys up until recently,” Robyn said in a statement. “It started to feel more like a band thing than songs for a Röyksopp or Robyn album so we’re releasing this music together as a band you could say.” The Norwegian duo added, “This doesn’t sound like Röyksopp featuring Robyn or Robyn produced by Röyksopp, it’s just something else entirely.” However, this description of “Sayit” is by far the best quote in the press release: “features a near duet between Robyn and what sounds like an aroused robot.”

The lead single will be the title track, which drops April 28, but the trio released a snippet of the EP’s opening 10-minute epic “Monument.” Hear the 90-second “Monument” preview below and check out the full tracklist.

1. Monument
2. Sayit
3. Do It Again
4. Every Little Thing
5. Inside The Idle Hour Club

Robyn and Röyksopp previously collaborated on “The Girl And The Robot” off Röyksopp’s 2009 album Junior and “None Of Dem” from Robyn’s 2010 release Body Talk Pt. 1.

8cf70427d3abc72999a5b5c10b685d1d Watch Drake Make His Coachella Debut During Jhene Aiko’s Set

Back when Drake performed on SNL in January, he brought out Jhene Aiko for part of “From Time,” and the young singer capitalized on that moment in the national spotlight. Sunday (April 13) at Coachella, Aiko returned the favor, bringing out her YMCMB pal for that same Nothing Was The Same track. Rather improbably, this served as Drake’s Coachella debut.

“This is my first time at Coachella, by the way,” Drake told the crowd. “So I want to let you know that it’s a motherfuckin’ honor to be here with you tonight, and you better make some noise for Jhene one more time.” What’s more, Drizzy made it out to the desert just after attending the MTV Movie Awards earlier that night to catch his maybe-girlfriend Rihanna‘s performance of “The Monster” with Eminem.
