The 10 Best Pop Songs From 2004 That We Still Love Today

750fddf543ab0babd776c62112602cad The 10 Best Pop Songs From 2004 That We Still Love Today

2004: The year of socialite and future pop legend Paris Hilton, ripping songs off Limewire, rocking Juicy Couture sweatsuits, fangirling over The O.C., the Napoleon Dynamite and Mean Girls fan craze, Myspace Top 8 and of course – some of the biggest and best music ever! of It’s hard to believe that ten years has passed since one of the greatest eras of pop music, which is all thanks to artists like Britney Spears, Usher, Amy Winehouse, Kelis, JoJo and many more.

In honor of this unforgettable year, we’ve curated a list (in no particular order) of the ten best pop jams from 2004 that we still can’t get enough of in 2014. Relive your nostalgia below!

1. “Drop It Like It’s Hot” – Snoop Dogg (feat. Pharrell)

Starting off this list is Snoop Dogg‘s single, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” featuring Pharrell Williams. Release off of his seventh studio album R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, the double platinum-selling single became Snoop Dogg’s breakthrough into chart-topping territory. Back in 2004, you couldn’t turn on the television or the radio without hearing the catchy “Snooooooppppppp!” tagline! The song kept its #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, and also landed on numerous Top 10 charts worldwide. “Drop It Like It’s Hot” was the rapper’s first #1 single, as well as his first Top 10 hit as a solo artist since 1994′s “Gin & Juice.” He may refer to himself as “Snoop Lion” nowadays, but in 2004 it was all about S-N-double-O-P, D-O-double-G!

2. “Toxic” – Britney Spears

Britney Spears has been a force to be reckoned with ever since her 1999 debut with…Baby One More Time.” But in 2004, her status as the ultimate Princess of Pop reached its highest peak with her fourth studio album In The Zone. What made the album so special was its second single: “Toxic.” Quickly becoming the singer’s fourth Top 10 hit, it wiped out the popularity of “Me Against The Music” (In The Zone‘s first single) and dominated the music scene as one of the most powerful songs of the entire decade! Let’s be honest, who couldn’t get those zingy Bollywood strings out of their heads? “Toxic” is also special because it earned the singer her first Grammy, winning for Best Dance Recording in 2005. The certified Gold tune peaked at the #9 spot on Billboard‘s Hot 100 and landed in the Top 5 positions on endless charts around the world.

3. “Breakaway” – Kelly Clarkson

This next song comes courtesy of our favorite American Idol star. (Who actually remembers the names of half the other winners, anyway?) ”Breakaway” is from Kelly Clarkson‘s sophomore album, released in November of 2004. The song, which was co-written by Avril Lavigne, was originally planned for the pop-punk singer’s debut album Let Go. It didn’t fit with Lavigne’s sound at the time, but the inspirational ballad was perfect for the recent American Idol winner — it took the #6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became certified platinum in the U.S. “Breakaway” also ties with Celine Dion‘s “A New Day Has Come” for the longest-running #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts by a solo female artist. How’s that for a fun fact?

Maroon 5 Talks Gwen Stefani Collaboration “My Heart Is Open,” Written By Sia

8f75ca5423b4e4660906a8977e9ccff3 Maroon 5 Talks Gwen Stefani Collaboration “My Heart Is Open,” Written By Sia

Earlier this summer, Maroon 5 revealed that No Doubt‘s Gwen Stefani will be featured in its new album V. Now, guitarist James Valentine reveals the song’s title, “My Heart Is Open,” and that it was co-written by Sia.

“Living here in Los Angeles we’ve known Sia for a long time, back from when she was just an artist, before her second act as, like, the most brilliant pop songwriter of all time, so it was really cool just to work with her,” Valentine says to Billboard. The band has great timing, as Sia’s 1000 Forms of Fear just became her first chart-topper in the United States.

When news of the collaboration broke, frontman Adam Levine didn’t divulge much but did give away that he enjoyed the process. (“We just sat around and talked for hours,” he said.) Turns out, Maroon 5 was also excited because No Doubt had influenced the band when they were known as pop-rock outfit Kara’s Flowers.

“A lot of times when you meet your idols it’s a letdown, but it’s the opposite case with Gwen, apparently,” Valentine said, of the two Voice coaches meeting each other.

Read Valentine’s full interview about V, out September 2, at Billboard.

One Direction, Justin Timberlake Top List Of 2014′s Highest Grossing Tours

02178511f9b478e5d63b120079f63542 One Direction, Justin Timberlake Top List Of 2014′s Highest Grossing Tours

One Direction tops Pollstar’s list of 2014′s highest-grossing tours so far. The UK boy band’s Where We Are trek has raked in more than $131 million so far, besting sales of landmark tours by The Rolling Stones ($115 million), including the legendary rock band’s first-ever concert in Israel. Justin Timberlake ranks third on the list ($110 million), though with his 20/20 world tour now returning to the United States his sales are bound to go up.

Other acts didn’t come close to selling as much as the top three. The ever-reliable Bruce Springstreen & the E Street Band (Timberlake is a fan) has brought in $64 million. Meanwhile, save for 1D, Timberlake and Bruno Mars and his Moonshine Jungle Tour rounding out the top ten, the year’s biggest sellers so far have been legacy acts, like George Strait and the Eagles. As Popdust points out, Cher is the only female in the top ten, though with Beyonce (Mrs. Carter Show) and Miley Cyrus (Bangerz) not trailing far behind.

Head on over to Pollstar for the full list. After the jump, see a fan-made compilation of the best moments from One Direction’s tour, set at the start to The Weather Girls’ “It’s Raining Men.”

Jhene Aiko Debuts New Song “The Pressure”: Listen

25b552dbf322e915c18be34c923d1d3b Jhene Aiko Debuts New Song “The Pressure”: Listen

Jhene Aiko revealed last month that she would release her debut LP, Souled Out, on August 25. With her meandering new song “The Pressure,” however, she tells Vogue that she has pushed back the release to September. Based on how “The Pressure” plays out, Aiko seems to realize that her time to deliver is approaching.

Initially, while singing over metallic slaps and a shaky beat, Aiko maintains her cool as she exhales deeply into each verse. Halfway through, however, her words become sharper. “You are such a liar / I never denied you, I was for sure,” she sings, before she becomes flat-out dismissive. While Aiko says “The Pressure” was inspired by the stress of finishing Souled Out, she sounds ready to turn the blame on someone else.

In reality, the delay may be for the best. As announced earlier this summer, she will join The Weeknd and Schoolboy Q on a brief King of the Fall tour, now to coincide with Souled Out‘s release. Plus, Aiko has some lofty ambitions for her debut. “ I feel like everything is on another level. It’s deeper,” she said to Idolator, in an interview back in December.

For now, hear “The Pressure” at Vogue.com.

Popping Up: Gorgon City

8ff685417176a83f85de54efe8558b46 Popping Up: Gorgon City

Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey — Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.

For our latest installment of Popping Up, we turn our eyes and ears to London, where rising dance duo Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott, better known as Gorgon City, have been not-so-quietly carving out their impressive platform on the house music scene over the past year. The pair’s irresistible club cuts like “Ready For Your Love” and “Here For You” have elevated the status of singer-songwriters like MNEK and Laura Welsh, and they even recorded a song last year with their contemporaries Clean Bandit and produced “Rather Be” songbird Jess Glynne‘s latest single.

Ahead of the duo’s North American festival dates in August and the fall release of their debut album, we gave Matt a call to discuss the pop force that is Gorgon City.

BAND NAME: Gorgon City.

WHERE THEY’RE FROM: North London, United Kingdom.

WHO THEY ARE: Kye “Foamo” Gibbon & Matt “RackNRuin” Robson-Scott.

HOW YOU KNOW THEM: Gorgon City’s breakthrough single “Ready For Your Love” features Idolator favorite MNEK on vocals and landed at #2 on the UK chart earlier this year.

Gorgon City featuring MNEK — ”Ready For Your Love”

HOW THEY CELEBRATED THEIR FIRST BIG CHART HIT: “I think at the time we’d been kind of gigging quite a lot,” Matt explains to Idolator. “We were celebrating when we were at shows and stuff. I remember the night before it was supposed to come out, and MNEK was with us, and we had a sort of celebration because obviously we’re really happy with the song and stuff. It was a fun time when we made that.”

BEFORE ALL THAT, THE PAIR DID A LITTLE SONG CALLED “REAL” WITH A SINGER NAMED YASMIN: Matt explains, “Me and Kye hadn’t been working together very long — just kind of making tunes for fun at the time — and then our manager put us in contact with Yasmin. It was the first vocal track we wrote. It was kind of like a new thing, us working together and working with vocalists. It was a turning point in technique and, after, format in how we work in the studio, because we did it in a way where we literally just had nothing. We just literally met up with the vocalists, had no idea what we were going to do and sort of started with a very simple chord progression. Then we started to write the whole song. From that point on, that’s been how we kind of work every time.”

Gorgon City featuring Yasmin — ”Real”

MATT AND KYE STARTED OFF DJ-ING/PRODUCING ON THEIR OWN: “Obviously, we never really it would happen,” Matt says. “It was just little collaborations between me and Kye with a lot of different side projects from our solo stuff we were doing back then. So it’s been crazy, being able to do music with great vocalists and great songwriters, getting signed to Virgin in the UK, and just you know touring, doing crazy tours, amazing shows all over the world. It’s been a lot of fun, a bit tiring, but we’ve finally got to the final stage of the album.”

WHEN THEIR ALBUM IS DUE OUT: September. Matt gave us a few hints about the vocalists they worked with for the LP: “Maverick Sabre is on the album. He’s big in the UK and in Europe. He’s an amazing artist, and a really great singer and songwriter. He’s on a couple of songs. Also there are a lot of up-and-coming people like MNEK and Laura Welsh, and loads of other interesting people.”

Gorgon City featuring Laura Welsh — “Here For You”

GORGON CITY ALSO RECORDED A SONG LAST YEAR WITH “RATHER BE” HIT-MAKERS CLEAN BANDIT: Matt tells us, “I think they’re kind of part of the same part of London as me. I think one of them went to school with some friends of  mine. We just sort of found out about them. We were fans of their stuff, and then Black Butter put out one of their tracks, and then they asked us to remix it .So we did the remix, and after the remix, we decided to do a collaboration.”

Gorgon City featuring Clean Bandit — ”Intentions”

EVEN JESS GLYNNE IS IN WITH GORGON CITY: You know Jess from her featured vocals on Route 94‘s “My Love” and Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be.” And, yep — Matt And Kye co-wrote and produced “Right Here,” her debut single that’s now sitting nicely in the UK Top 10.

Jess Glynne — ”Right Here” (produced by Gorgon City)

“We were kind of sitting on ['Right Here'] for a while,” Matt says. “We didn’t know what was going to happen with it, and then she obviously did quite a lot of features [this year]. It was nice because it came out quicker than it would’ve. Her album will be coming out soon, so it should be well. We’re really happy that people have heard it.”

WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE DUO LIVE: Currently trekking across Europe, Gorgon City hit the West Coast in August for a string of festival dates, including Outside Lands. Full list here.

Teenaged Kanye West Shouts Out Alanis Morissette In 1996 Freestyle: Watch

2b2825077ef4d929e3fd69325609a9f8 Teenaged Kanye West Shouts Out Alanis Morissette In 1996 Freestyle: Watch

A 19-year-old Kanye West calls out no-name rappers in an unearthed freestyle from 1996. One of the most memorable lines is “this shit is mad ironic, like Alanis Morissette,” because the mental image of Yeezus listening to that song, if not the entirety of 1995′s Jagged Little Pill is too great. (It was one of the biggest albums of that decade.) The reference also helps emphasize how confident West already was at the time, even though he wasn’t rapping with a hard “HAH” just yet.

West had flown in from Chicago to the newly-opened New York location of record store Fat Beats. (The store closed in 2010.) Its former general manager, DJ Eclipse, had found the footage while converting old Hi8 video tapes to DVDs, before he uploaded the clip and sent it to Complex.

“Now we had a lot of the usual suspects in the place that day,” DJ Eclipse said, adding, “But what took me by surprise was the appearance of this 19-year-old kid who at that time nobody knew. At least in NYC.”

Dissing no-name rappers, while being a no-name rapper himself — now that’s mad ironic. Watch the freestyle below.

Is A S Club 7 Reunion On The Way?

5182ca6a791a6ca1f753612b9aa559aa Is A S Club 7 Reunion On The Way?

It’s been said time and time again: There ain’t no party like a S Club party. It’s a sentiment that still rings true to this day…but will there be a new S Club 7 party sometime soon?

On Wednesday, bandmate Hannah Spearritt posted a rather incriminating tweet: “See y’all tomorrow S’s!”, tagging each bandmate in an old school photo of the whole gang together. Bradley McIntosh replied with a photo of the troupe too. The reunion evidently happened, confirmed after Hannah posted a photo with Tina Barrett and Paul Cattermole. “Last 3 standing! @realtinab1 & @Paulcattermole1 #heatwave #goodtimes lol,” she wrote.

Of course, there’ve been rumblings of a S Club reunion for years: As of June, bandmate-turned-solo UK pop princess Rachel Stevens revealed on Lorraine that the troupe has been “texting and tweeting,” and that “it would be fun” to reunite. Of course, there was that time Bradley, Paul and Jo reunited in 2012 on The Morning Show in Australia (in front of Dannii Minogue, no less!) but…we’re hoping this time around, they’ve got all 7 back together again.

What’s this all about? A new album? One-off performances? Or maybe it’s just for the sake of taking a trip down memory lane together. Who knows? Just don’t stop and never give up. Check out the S Club tweets after the jump, and enjoy a little #FlashbackFriday with a little “Reach.”

Jessie Ware Reveals ‘Tough Love’ Album Title, Cover Art

54a6f8d2280cded301c665cedc33607f Jessie Ware Reveals ‘Tough Love’ Album Title, Cover Art

Earlier this month, Jessie Ware debuted her new single “Tough Love.” And today she revealed that the minimal ballad is actually the title track of sophomore LP, out later this year on Island/Cherrytree. Ware also shared the album artwork (above), which is as understated as the song itself.

For Tough Love Ware, has reunited with her Devotion collaborators Dave Okumu, Kid Harpoon and Julio Bashmore (“Peppermint”), while also teaming with artists who could help boost her profile: Ed Sheeran, Miguel (the two are also working on his third album together), Arctic Monkeys producer James Ford and Nineteen85, who co-produced Drake‘s “Hold On We’re Going Home.” As she tells Pitchfork though, she ultimately hopes that Tough Love will present her voice at its purest, more so than in Devotion.

“I’m so proud of Devotion and I have such a romantic memory of how it was made, but I didn’t really know what I was doing then,” she says. “I was scared. I doubled my vocal quite a lot; I almost didn’t want people to hear too much of my character. But my vocal is more laid-bare on this one. I’m definitely not belting the whole way through, but I branched out more—hopefully I’ll be able to sing the bloody album live.”
