Tiesto Follows Up Crossover Pop Hit “Red Lights” With Matthew Koma-Voiced “Wasted”: Listen

ef5bf346eb6d6eccb371c0e21c974676 Tiesto Follows Up Crossover Pop Hit “Red Lights” With Matthew Koma Voiced “Wasted”: Listen

Tiesto‘s decision to try his hand at an Avicii-like crossover dance-pop hit turned out to be inspired. “Red Lights” swiftly became the biggest (non-remix) hit of the Dutch DJ’s blockbuster career and is still climbing the Billboard Hot 100. He’s hoping to find similar success with catchy follow-up single “Wasted”, which features the voice of Matthew Koma.

“Wasted” is an even bigger step away from the 45-year-old’s usual hard-hitting trance/electro-house comfort zone. While “Red Lights” crossed over thanks to an exceedingly catchy and commercial topline, its follow-up combines elements from pop, rock and EDM. “I like us better when we’re wasted,” sings Mathew over strummed guitar before the synths arrive. It’s instantly hummable and very radio-friendly, which is the whole point. Listen to Tiesto’s next hit after the jump.

Does Tiesto have another hit on his hands? Have your say in the comments below.

Robyn And Röyksopp’s ‘Do It Again’ EP Is Every Bit As Good As You Imagined

25d5d1ec7edadc0c391739822975e5e4 Robyn And Röyksopp’s ‘Do It Again’ EP Is Every Bit As Good As You Imagined

News that Robyn had recorded an EP with Norwegian dance outfit Röyksopp had electro-pop connoisseurs salivating. As such, it’s a relief to report that Do It Again is every bit as magnificent as you would expect from the Scandinavian team that brought you 2009 gem “The Girl And The Robot” — at least, if the just-surfaced title track and icy synth-ballad “Every Little Thing” are any indication.

After months of sloppy electronic pop from acts that really should know better, Röyksopp‘s beautifully crisp synths combined with Robyn’s emotional vocal make for a heady mix indeed. The catchy title track is an upbeat floorfiller that with a surprisingly commercial chorus, while “Every Little Thing” sounds like an intricately-crafted sequel to the Swedish diva’s killer Kleerup collab “With Every Heartbeat”.

You can listen to Robyn And Röyksopp’s new jams over at Pop On And On. Give us your verdict in the comments below.

Beyonce Lends Her Voice To Surprise Boots Duet “Dreams”: Listen

5963237d9a6b19038bf09e02cdbb920d Beyonce Lends Her Voice To Surprise Boots Duet “Dreams”: Listen

Boots became one of the hottest producers in the game — literally overnight — when Beyonce‘s critically acclaimed visual album hit iTunes at midnight on December 13. His simultaneously intricate and sparse production set the tone for the game-changing LP and greatly influenced the current direction of R&B as a genre. It’s only fair then that Queen Bey return the favor and lend her golden voice to one of Jordan Asher‘s (his real name) tunes.

“Dreams” is a sleepy, jazz-tinged ballad that showcases both Boots’ production acumen and his own vocal ability. He voices most of the romantic ballad (“I’ve been dreamin’ of you all my life”) and gets deep into his feelings in the verses before Beyonce harmonizes with him on the chorus and has her own star turn at around the 2:40 minute mark. It’s exceedingly beautiful and reminds me of 4 bonus track “Dreaming” (albeit with an indie twist). All proceeds go to Day One — a charity that aims to stop the abuse of women. Listen to Bey and Boots after the  jump.

Is Boots and Bey the perfect combination? Let us know in the comments below.

Courtney Love’s “You Know My Name”: Listen To Her New Solo Single

b59b7cf2434e4188f0a302f2c16388f2 Courtney Love’s “You Know My Name”: Listen To Her New Solo Single

Fresh off the news that the classic ’90s lineup of Hole have reunited to knock the dust off their catalog (and possibly record new material) — and ahead of her May UK tour dates — rowdy rocker Courtney Love has unveiled one-half of her upcoming double A-side solo single, “You Know My Name”/”Wedding Day.”

With a run time of less than three minutes, Courtney yelps, screams and howls like it’s 1994 atop crunchy guitars and a final squelch of feedback on the slick “You Know My Name,” a track that ought to keep her fanbase more than satisfied. The song will be released May 4, but you can give it a listen below.

Martin Garrix Teams Up With Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike For “Tremors”: Watch The Gritty Video

2c12bb04ac5bfc47059ea580e12c4846 Martin Garrix Teams Up With Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike For “Tremors”: Watch The Gritty Video

Martin Garrix scored one of the most unexpected crossover dance hits in recent memory with “Animals”. The furious electro-house anthem clicked with clubbers and mainstream pop listeners alike, despite the absence of a topline or big-name featured artist. The Dutch DJ’s breakthrough hit is still climbing the Billboard Hot 100, while the video has racked up over 220 million views.

Needless to say, expectations are high for the 17-year-old’s follow-up. “Tremors”, a collaboration with Greek-Belgian brothers Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, is another aggressive electro-instrumental with a killer drop that will, no doubt, sound truly epic in clubs. That probably explains the video’s simple approach. It combines footage of the DJs doing their thing with a scantily clad model prancing around. Watch up top.

Will “Tremors” crossover like “Animals”? Have your say in the comments below.

5 Questions With Rixton: Fun Facts, Recording Naked & Hooking Up With Scooter Braun

7a92f9628a9150d1b88f9740f97a06b2 5 Questions With Rixton: Fun Facts, Recording Naked & Hooking Up With Scooter Braun

Rixton has certainly come a long way since they first appeared on our radar last year with their spoof-tastic “Make Out” video. The British band took a more mature direction for debut single “Me And My Broken Heart” and immediately struck chart gold. The Benny Blanco-produced pop/rock anthem is already top 30 on iTunes and steadily climbing the Billboard Hot 100.

The rising stars dropped by the Idolator studio earlier this year to chat about their humble beginnings and future plans. Lewi, Jake, Charley and Danny opened up about being signed by Scooter Braun (he also manages Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Martin Garrix) and recording their debut album naked! Find out more about your new favorite band up top.

Ariana Grande Previews Sassy Iggy Azalea-Assisted Single “Problem”: Listen

30864fae1c650035730ad8225dc694bc Ariana Grande Previews Sassy Iggy Azalea Assisted Single “Problem”: Listen

Breathe a sigh of relief, Arianators. Any concern that the 20-year-old had pulled a Miley Cyrus and turned her back on her previously wholesome ways (the sexy cover and Iggy Azalea feature raised the question) has been dispelled by the first taste of “Problem”. Sure, it’s sassy but this isn’t a huge leap in sound from Ariana Grande‘s Yours Truly LP.

“Head in the clouds got no weight in my shoulders,” Ari sings in her trademark Mariah Carey-tastic whistle register. “I should be wiser and realize that I’ve got one less problem without you.” And that’s where the trap-lite drop hits. It’s fairly tame but still different enough to prove that the rising diva is evolving and trying new things. I can’t wait to hear what Iggy adds to the track. Listen after the jump.

Boots Steps Out Of The Shadows On “A Day In The Life Of Jordan Asher”: Listen

0ccc3707e4b88e49ed719fbe77e931c4 Boots Steps Out Of The Shadows On “A Day In The Life Of Jordan Asher”: Listen

Shadowy producer Boots was a literal no-name when pop listeners found out he was behind the boards for a significant portion of Beyonce‘s self-titled album. Little by little, though, we’ve learned about the man, and now he has dropped a song with his full name in the title, making it that much harder to remember a time when nobody knew who the hell this Boots character was, and making it clear he doesn’t hope to replicate The Weeknd‘s early strategy of buzz via mystery.

On “A Day In The Life Of Jordan Asher,” Boots strikes his rap pose, calmly rhyming about everything from America’s working class to his luck with the ladies to a grisly NYC subway death that occurred in 2012. As with the rest of Boots’ material thus far, it stands on its own, regardless of the Bey connection.

The song is off Boots’ forthcoming self-produced, self-written WinterSpringSummerFall project, which will include previously heard tracks like “Ride Ride Ride” and “Dust.” Check it out below.

Iggy Azalea’s ‘The New Classic’: Review Revue

ae83940a96ce177536a5959f7d4a7a32 Iggy Azalea’s ‘The New Classic’: Review Revue

Iggy Azalea finally delivered her debut album The New Classic today (April 22), and it finds the Aussie model and MC weaving her rags-to-riches tale over top-notch pop production. While it never goes into good kid, m.A.A.d city levels of specificity, the LP is still an intriguing listen, showing how a female rapper not named Nicki can balance hip-hop “authenticity” with blatant pop chart aspirations. Rather interestingly, the fact that Iggy’s entire shtick is openly built on a fake Southern accent may actually make it easier for her to navigate that divide.

But that doesn’t mean she stuck the landing. We gave The New Classic a 2.5/5, saying “most of the album simply sounds stale” and that the reliance on lyrical generalities “makes Azalea’s Cinderella story seem rather ordinary.” That middle-of-the-road assessment seems to sum up the rather tepid tide of the reviews out there. Maybe she was just doomed from the get-go because of that audacious title.

Head below for a roundup of critical reactions to her debut.

:: Rolling Stone matched our score, highlighting her curious rap accent and shameless pop hooks, concluding, “If this is the future, it’s one strange place.”

:: HipHopDX likewise handed out a 2.5, opining, “The level of production and collaborators far outshines the work of the lead emcee.”

:: SPIN called it a “stone cold dud” and “a state of the art 2011 album” in their 4/10 review. “The New Classic establishes the Australian artist as a competent rapper with a decent ear for hooks, but that’s about it.”

:: Time says it’s “a paint-by-numbers exercise in what a modern rap album should be” and notes “she’s perhaps already run out of things to say on her supposed classic.”

:: Deadspin (apparently covering music now!) said, “It’s ultimately a missed opportunity to get to know more about an artist who’s very possibly more multifaceted than she lets on. Equal parts flaw and flair, it seems destined to take its place in hip-hop’s pantheon of albums with unfortunately overenthusiastic titles, alongside inductees like Slim Thug’s gold-selling Already Platinum and Puff Daddy’s forgotten Forever.”

:: The New York Times offered up a report card-style review with this final evaluation: “Student is an extremely hard worker, but so much so that what’s loudest much of the time is the labor involved, not the art itself. Student’s complete commitment to character and form compensate slightly for the unrelenting weirdness of this project.”

:: The Guardian was slightly more impressed, grading a 3/5. “Azalea’s rags-to-riches story shines on Work, but elsewhere her ‘bow down to a goddess’ schtick grows tiring.”

:: The Line Of Best Fit was the most positive of the bunch, scoring an 8/10 and calling it an “an ambitious pop-rap record” that could inspire listeners, suggesting listeners “Let her gospel be an allegory for your rise.”
