The 55-year-old, who had son Prince Jackson, 17, and 16-year-daughter Paris Jackson with the late pop star, is hoping to obtain custody because she feels Katherine Jackson is too old to care for them. Michael Jackson’s “Xscape”: Listen To The Title Track From His Latest Posthumous Album

7ee5003518c23ae9a7bf7718bf1f38bc Michael Jackson’s “Xscape”: Listen To The Title Track From His Latest Posthumous Album

Michael Jackson‘s forthcoming posthumous album Xscape is set to contain collaborations with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Questlove and D’Angelo, though the title track, which has surfaced online in full, features MJ going it alone.

Kudos to whomever spruced up the driving beat here, because it does resemble the “classic” Jackson sound, somewhat. But overall, the melody in “Xscape”  is pretty much barren of hooks and the chorus is missing that old King-Of-Pop magic. It’s not hard to see why this original demo never went any further, previously…and it doesn’t exactly leave us wanting more from this project.

Bottom line: it’s probably time to put the lid on these reheated Michael Jackson leftovers. Give “Xscape” a listen below and see if you agree.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’ LP Will Contain A Song About Child Abuse & High-Profile Collabs

d845537dc23ea7336026ee6f9321b6aa Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’ LP Will Contain A Song About Child Abuse & High Profile Collabs

Michael Jackson‘s posthumous Xscape LP (due May 13) has been shrouded in mystery but details about the much-anticipated project are finally starting to emerge. For starters, the collection of freshly overhauled unreleased material reportedly includes a song about a child prostitute called “Do You Know Where Your Children Are?”

A demo of that song leaked way back in 2010 and contains the disturbing lyric “she is tired of step-daddy using her, saying that he’ll buy her things while sexually abusing her”. In other Xscape news, (former member of The Time) Jesse Johnson revealed that a track he worked on features Mary J. Blige, Questlove and D’Angelo. Pretty impressive line-up!

Are you excited for Xscape or skeptical about the project? Let us know in the comments below.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’ Announced: Posthumous Album Out In May

0c0e52a1cb927c5121d866767e14c85c Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’ Announced: Posthumous Album Out In May

Epic Records today (March 31) announced a new posthumous Michael Jackson album called Xscape. The collection features eight previously unreleased tracks with updated production and is out May 13, and it was executive produced by Epic Chairman and C.E.O. L.A. Reid, who was given unlimited access to Jackson’s recording archive from the Jackson estate.

From there, Reid selected a final list of unheard tracks, and handed them over to producers to clean them up and give them modern tweaks — “contemporizing,” as Reid calls it. Timbaland served as the album’s lead producer, with additional production from Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon and John McClain. The title track was both written and produced by Jackson and Jerkins, and thus it’s the sole track on the album that was retooled by its original producer. And if you want to hear how MJ originally envisioned the tracks, the deluxe edition includes the original sourced recordings.

There’s no tracklist yet (so it’s unclear if “Slave To The Rhythm” made the final cut), but you can see a high-res version of the album cover below.

Akon Plays Pop Associated, Talks Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Whitney Houston & More

457fdac580264a73e68a4d97c66b5102 Akon Plays Pop Associated, Talks Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Whitney Houston & More

While Akon stopped by the Idolator to discuss his philanthropic work with the Akon Lighting Africa Project and Peace One Day, we also made a point of asking him about the sheer volume of other artists the smooth crooner has collaborated with over the last 10 years. After all, this is the guy who signed Lady Gaga to his Kon Live label, sang the memorable wooh hoo hook on Gwen Stefani‘s “Sweet Escape,” worked with Michael Jackson on several songs before the pop king’s death and penned tracks for Whitney Houston‘s final album I Look To You.

We also couldn’t help singling out one of the hands-down best collabs Akon has ever done (in our humble opinion) — Kardinall Offishall‘s 2007 smash “Dangerous” — and getting the full scoop on how the song came together.

Above, watch Akon as he rattles off the first thing that comes to mind with each artist we mention. Then head below to watch him school us on his hit “Dangerous.”

7 Questions With Akon: Unreleased Michael Jackson, Harlee, ‘Stadium’ & His Lighting Africa Project

0a700014ede0456a68d242ed7e13ed81 7 Questions With Akon: Unreleased Michael Jackson, Harlee, ‘Stadium’ & His Lighting Africa Project

Akon has been hitting the pavement to get the word out about two of his passion projects, but this time they’re not music releases. (That said, he does have a single out, “So Blue,” which you can purchase on iTunes here.) Rather, the hit-making music mogul is putting his power behind two philanthropic endeavors: Akon Lighting Africa, a project that aims to bring electricity to 1 million households in rural areas of the continent, and Peace One Day, a concert in the Congo this September 21 that Akon will headline in an effort to promote nonviolence on a day dedicated to cease-fire in war-torn areas.

Akon stopped by our studio to talk about these campaigns, and while chatting he let on that there are still a few unreleased “ideas” — in some form or other — with regards to collaborations between he and Michael Jackson that he’s holding onto.  One music-related project that will see the light of day in 2014, according to the singer, is his long-delayed fourth album Stadium.

“I’m definitely committed to putting out an album before the end of the year,” Akon tells Idolator, in the video interview posted above. “It’s goin’ out. I’ll be able to give you the exact dates very soon, but I have a huge plan on how I’m going to release it.”

Aside from his own music, Akon also recently collaborated with famed choreographer Laurieann Gibson (aka Harlee) on her single “Dream Warriors.”

“I’m looking forward to her, just on the road,” he says. “I think once she goes out on tour, people will really see a performance [that's] out of this world. She’s one of the most innovative, creative type of artists in a long time.”

Tame Impala Covers Michael Jackson’s “Stranger In Moscow”: Listen To The Hazy Delight

5d71ac215697769680deabbf5f9fb038 Tame Impala Covers Michael Jackson’s “Stranger In Moscow”: Listen To The Hazy Delight

Australian psych-rock band Tame Impala has recorded a surprisingly great cover of Michael Jackson‘s 1996 single “Stranger In Moscow”. While far from MJ’s biggest hit (it peaked at number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100), few tracks in the King of Pop’s discography do a better job of capturing the isolation and alienation he must have been feeling toward the end of his life.

The lo-fi rock interpretation is thought to be part of Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker‘s disco-inspired side-project. He has a busy year ahead. The band is working on the follow up to breakthrough sophomore set Lonerism and recently featured on Kendrick Lamar‘s Divergent soundtrack cut “Backwards”. Listen to their hazy take on “Stranger In Moscow” after the jump.

Did the band do Michael justice? Have your say in the comments below.

Michael Jackson’s Timbaland-Produced “Slave To The Rhythm”: Hear A Snippet Of The New Track

c849d3a09c6e6c637ccd8fc8ef33e6ef Michael Jackson’s Timbaland Produced “Slave To The Rhythm”: Hear A Snippet Of The New Track

Back in August 2013, Timbaland revealed L.A. Reid enlisted him to work on a posthumous Michael Jackson album featuring Jackson’s unreleased vocals and Tim’s production. Tim said back then that he’d have the work done by the end of 2013, but only now are we hearing the first bit of music from the project.

For Timbaland Thursdays, the producer posted a 1:07 snippet of a new song called “Slave To The Rhythm.” The majority of the chunk is a typically busy Tim arrangement, with his syncopated percussion intertwining with 20/20 Experience-type strings. Then the King of Pop storms in with his angry voice, repeating “She’s a slave to the rhythm.”

To be honest, the Timbo sound kind of overwhelms MJ on this one, but it’s tough to really know with such a short sample. Hear it for yourself below.

Bastille Mash Up Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” & Pulp’s “Common People” For Live Lounge: Watch

2441de61d65c282a520b40cfe74ac0ed Bastille Mash Up Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” & Pulp’s “Common People” For Live Lounge: Watch

Bastille are no strangers to mashing up classic ’90s pop jams, as evidenced by their Corona vs. Snap! tour de force, “Of The Night.” And this time around the London band chose Michael Jackson‘s “Earth Song” and Pulp‘s “Common People” to blend together, for their BBC Live Lounge performance.

With the BRIT Awards just around the corner, this particular choice of songs is a bit of a wink back to the 1996 Brits, when Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker rushed the stage during Jackson’s overblown performance of “Earth Song” and playfully mooned the audience.

Above, catch Bastille’s soulful “Earth Song” and “Common People” performance, and then see the notorious prank Cocker pulled at the Brits below.
