5 Michael Jackson Songs That Charted Higher Internationally Than In The US

8d8ac1db621ab11fd0a19f81629be8a2 5 Michael Jackson Songs That Charted Higher Internationally Than In The US

Today (August 29) would have been Michael Jackson‘s 56th birthday. It boggles the mind to think what treasures the King of Pop could have created if he were still alive but his legacy is so incredibly vast that there’s always something new to discover. To celebrate the life of the gloved genius, I’ve put together a list of five singles that performed considerably better overseas than at home.

It’s hard to fathom how classic tracks like 1995′s environmental awareness-raising “Earth Song” could be the highest-selling MJ single of all time in the UK but not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. That has a lot to do with the way charts were compiled in the ’90s and the lack of a physical release but it still feels completely wrong. Discover over such cases after the jump.

1. “Heal The World”

The sixth single from Dangerous only reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992 but the inspiring ballad performed considerably better in Europe. It peaked at number three in Germany and number two in France and the UK.

2. “Give In To Me”

The next single from Dangerous received even less love stateside, where it didn’t garner an official release. However, the rock anthem received a lot of attention around the world. It peaked at number one in New Zealand, number four in Australia and number two in the UK.

3. “Earth Song”

As I mentioned earlier, “Earth Song” wasn’t given an official released in the US in 1995. Meanwhile, it’s MJ’s highest-selling single in the UK where it spent six weeks at number one. It also topped the charts in Spain, Switzerland and Germany.

4. “Stranger In Moscow”

This is one of my all-time favorite Michael Jackson songs because I think it gives astonishing insight into the loneliness (and perhaps paranoia) he was feeling at the time. The HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I single reached number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100 but topped the charts in Italy and Spain. It also reached number four in the UK and 14 in Australia.

5. “Blood On The Dance Floor”

The lead single from the pop icon’s 1997 Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix remix album, “Blood On The Dance Floor” stalled at number 42 in the US but reached number one in New Zealand, Spain and the UK.

Michael Jackson’s “A Place With No Name” Video Makes Its History-Making Debut On Twitter

32a810543a917c64aa624f48bd204069 Michael Jackson’s “A Place With No Name” Video Makes Its History Making Debut On Twitter

Michael Jackson made history again last night (August 13) when his “A Place With No Name” video became the first to premiere on Twitter. Directed by Samuel Bayer, the choreography-heavy visual for Xscape‘s official second single is comprised of behind-the-scenes/unused footage from 1992′s “In The Closet”, archival clips of MJ and new dance scenes staged in the desert.

The finished result is a pleasant burst of nostalgia but if you’re looking for more than a lovingly-curated walk down memory lane, “A Place With No Name” falls short. The black-and-white scenes at the beginning of the video blend nicely with the unearthed footage but the second half is a little sloppy. If only Michael were still here to exert quality control. Find a link to the history-making opus after the jump.

If that link doesn’t work, try clicking here. Do you love the video or is it a bit of a let down? Let us know in the comments below.

“A Place With No Name” Is The Next Single From Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’, Video Release Date Set

217996f8af1a7e258c6d64634e4b2c0b “A Place With No Name” Is The Next Single From Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’, Video Release Date Set

Sony has chosen “A Place With No Name” as the second single from Michael Jackson‘s well-received posthumous LP Xscape. The pop icon “continues to push the boundaries forward and once again makes HISTORY!” according to his Facebook page. How, you might be wondering? Well, it turns out the song’s video will be the first to premiere on Twitter (on August 13 at 10pm EST).

It’s an interesting choice. I think “Loving You” is a better fit for radio (and would appeal to the fans that fell in love with “Love Never Felt So Good”) but “A Place With No Name” has certainly grown on me since it first surfaced online. Let’s just hope the video is spectacular and worthy of MJ’s legacy. Listen to the America-sampling, Stargate-updated anthem after the jump.

Is “A Place With No Name” the best choice? Let us know in the comments below.

4th Of July: 10 Artists You Forgot Sang The National Anthem, From The Jackson 5 To Mandy Moore

c263939098dfc9fe3c9705847f160a64 4th Of July: 10 Artists You Forgot Sang The National Anthem, From The Jackson 5 To Mandy Moore

Ain’t nobody gonna claim “The Star-Spangled Banner” is easy to sing. (Well, maybe one, but she’s dead.) Although we all know the lyrics (well, kind of) and we all know the melody (umm, mostly), public performances of the national anthem are always tricky and tend to live on…much to Michael Bolton’s terror. So let’s shine Lady Liberty’s light on those patriotic popsters whose performances have, fairly or not, been largely forgotten.

Hold on to your sparklers, kittens, and let freedom ring!

10. Stacey Q

When Bob Hope would rally his USO audiences of World War II service members by reminding them, “Boys, this is what you’re fighting for,” he obviously meant Stacy Q’s not-at-all-lip-synched whisperkitten coo.

9. The Jackson 5

Whether it was the patriotic occasion or the close proximity to all the sweaty ballplayers, Michael Jackson’s charisma and vocal talent have rarely been more glorious-ee-hee!

8. Backstreet Boys

Placing all this boyish shrieking so close to Michael Jackson was purely on accident…or was it?

7. Zooey Deschanel

A classy, respectfully jazzy cover — f*** that! We’re bored, Grandma, bring back Stacey Q!

6. Justin Guarini

A classy, respectfully — never mind, it’s not Kelly Clarkson.

Michael Jackson’s Father Says The King Of Pop Visits His Dreams On The 5th Anniversary Of Son’s Death

538fe9f2b1f831602f4a8a0f9ca23a8d Michael Jackson’s Father Says The King Of Pop Visits His Dreams On The 5th Anniversary Of Son’s Death

It’s hard to believe five years have passed since Michael Jackson‘s shocking death from cardiac arrest at age 50. The King of Pop’s father Joseph Jackson marked the sad anniversary today (June 25) by posting a touching tribute on his website. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think of you,” he wrote. “I miss you. Everywhere I go, your music follows me. I hear it in the stores, in the car, on TV.” Here’s where you might need a tissue: “You were a great son and I will always miss you.”

The 85-year-old then revealed that Michael visits him in his sleep. “Time and again in my sleep, my son visits me,” he begins. “When I was laying in bed sleeping, I dreamt he was in the same room as me, standing there and smiling.” Then things get a little supernatural. “I realized I was awake in a dream. He continued singing and his voice echoed out the door.” Read the full post after the jump.

Michael Jackson Unveils A Solo Version Of His “Love Never Felt So Good” Video: Watch

084e9848caf1bce1cb1667c8ab81e7ff Michael Jackson Unveils A Solo Version Of His “Love Never Felt So Good” Video: Watch

Secretly prefer the solo version of Michael Jackson‘s “Love Never Felt So Good”? (I know, I do!) Well, here’s a treat for your weekend. The King of Pop (or more accurately, his record label) has unveiled a new edit of the nostalgic visual, which simply deletes duet partner Justin Timberlake from the action. You’re left with a clips of MJ’s old videos and a troupe of dancers recreating his dance moves.

“Love Never Felt So Good” became the legendary performer’s biggest hit in over a decade when it reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year. It helped Michael set another chart record — he’s now the first artist to land top 10 hits in five different decades. Xscape is also turning out to be a very steady seller, which proves that MJ’s star power hasn’t waned one iota since his tragic death. Watch up top.
