4th Of July: 10 Artists You Forgot Sang The National Anthem, From The Jackson 5 To Mandy Moore

c263939098dfc9fe3c9705847f160a64 4th Of July: 10 Artists You Forgot Sang The National Anthem, From The Jackson 5 To Mandy Moore

Ain’t nobody gonna claim “The Star-Spangled Banner” is easy to sing. (Well, maybe one, but she’s dead.) Although we all know the lyrics (well, kind of) and we all know the melody (umm, mostly), public performances of the national anthem are always tricky and tend to live on…much to Michael Bolton’s terror. So let’s shine Lady Liberty’s light on those patriotic popsters whose performances have, fairly or not, been largely forgotten.

Hold on to your sparklers, kittens, and let freedom ring!

10. Stacey Q

When Bob Hope would rally his USO audiences of World War II service members by reminding them, “Boys, this is what you’re fighting for,” he obviously meant Stacy Q’s not-at-all-lip-synched whisperkitten coo.

9. The Jackson 5

Whether it was the patriotic occasion or the close proximity to all the sweaty ballplayers, Michael Jackson’s charisma and vocal talent have rarely been more glorious-ee-hee!

8. Backstreet Boys

Placing all this boyish shrieking so close to Michael Jackson was purely on accident…or was it?

7. Zooey Deschanel

A classy, respectfully jazzy cover — f*** that! We’re bored, Grandma, bring back Stacey Q!

6. Justin Guarini

A classy, respectfully — never mind, it’s not Kelly Clarkson.

Michael Jackson’s Father Says The King Of Pop Visits His Dreams On The 5th Anniversary Of Son’s Death

538fe9f2b1f831602f4a8a0f9ca23a8d Michael Jackson’s Father Says The King Of Pop Visits His Dreams On The 5th Anniversary Of Son’s Death

It’s hard to believe five years have passed since Michael Jackson‘s shocking death from cardiac arrest at age 50. The King of Pop’s father Joseph Jackson marked the sad anniversary today (June 25) by posting a touching tribute on his website. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think of you,” he wrote. “I miss you. Everywhere I go, your music follows me. I hear it in the stores, in the car, on TV.” Here’s where you might need a tissue: “You were a great son and I will always miss you.”

The 85-year-old then revealed that Michael visits him in his sleep. “Time and again in my sleep, my son visits me,” he begins. “When I was laying in bed sleeping, I dreamt he was in the same room as me, standing there and smiling.” Then things get a little supernatural. “I realized I was awake in a dream. He continued singing and his voice echoed out the door.” Read the full post after the jump.

Michael Jackson Unveils A Solo Version Of His “Love Never Felt So Good” Video: Watch

084e9848caf1bce1cb1667c8ab81e7ff Michael Jackson Unveils A Solo Version Of His “Love Never Felt So Good” Video: Watch

Secretly prefer the solo version of Michael Jackson‘s “Love Never Felt So Good”? (I know, I do!) Well, here’s a treat for your weekend. The King of Pop (or more accurately, his record label) has unveiled a new edit of the nostalgic visual, which simply deletes duet partner Justin Timberlake from the action. You’re left with a clips of MJ’s old videos and a troupe of dancers recreating his dance moves.

“Love Never Felt So Good” became the legendary performer’s biggest hit in over a decade when it reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year. It helped Michael set another chart record — he’s now the first artist to land top 10 hits in five different decades. Xscape is also turning out to be a very steady seller, which proves that MJ’s star power hasn’t waned one iota since his tragic death. Watch up top.

Do you prefer the solo version? Let us know in the comments below.

Watch Michael Jackson’s Amazing Spins Through The Years: Idolator Instant

265dcf1bf325a46080a8c762f02b3ce1 Watch Michael Jackson’s Amazing Spins Through The Years: Idolator Instant

From the Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back” in 1970 to Michael Jackson‘s “Love Never Felt So Good” this spring, the King Of Pop has been entertaining us with a dazzling flurry of hit singles, record-breaking albums, stunning live performances and, particularly, jaw-dropping dance moves over the past five decades. Granted, we now have to watch those moves and performances in retrospect…which is exactly what we did in the wake of the recent release of MJ’s posthumous album Xscape.

Sure, there are many signature steps Jackson had that remain emblazoned on our minds: the moonwalk: that leg kick; the, um, crotch grab. But we decided to focus on his famous spins over the years for our latest Idolator Instant compilation.

In the video clip above, you’ll see a young, teen-aged Michael twirling effortlessly through various TV performances with his brothers. As the years moved on and his solo albums like Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad began smashing sales records, he kept his trademark spin going on the stage and in the then-flourishing medium of music videos.

Further albums like Dangerous, HIStory and Invincible followed, and despite the heavy trappings of fame and personal issues that plagued the entertainer in the later years of his career — or perhaps because of them — MJ kept turning rapidly while performing before our very eyes.

Click play above to watch Michael Jackson spin through the decades during his monumental reign as the one true King Of Pop.

Michael Jackson’s “Love Never Felt So Good” Gets A Frankie Knuckles Remix: Listen

ca432a27d9bd3104e3ce22bad796787f Michael Jackson’s “Love Never Felt So Good” Gets A Frankie Knuckles Remix: Listen

I know you’re probably wondering how the recently-deceased Frankie Knuckles remixed a song by the not-so-recently deceased Michael Jackson. Well, I have an explanation that doesn’t involve the use of an Ouija board! The glittering overhaul is actually a tribute to the late house legend by fellow DJs David Morales and Eric Kupper.

“Love Never Felt So Good” turns out to be perfect fodder for a remix in the style of Frankie Knuckles. The smooth disco sound of the original is effortlessly updated to a piano-heavy ’90s house anthem that manages to be respectful to both the much-loved DJ and Michael. This is a worthy addition to any MJ iTunes playlist. Listen after the jump.

Would Frankie approve of this remix? Let us know in the comments below.

Ibrawlator: What Was The Best Album Of May?

8aec3a6bbe5d23e18dad978976403afb Ibrawlator: What Was The Best Album Of May?

Each month, we’re taking a look back at the albums that piqued our pop interest, pitting them against each other and then asking you to decide which album ultimately ruled.

It’s that oh-so-special time once again: The “Best Of” Ibrawlator for May! Last month, the ever-fancy I-G-G-Y Iggy Azalea took home the gold with her debut, The New Classic — and she’s surely not slowing down now.

But now, it’s time to take a look back and reflect on the best pop records of May.

The nominees for May? Mariah Carey‘s newly emancipated Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, Cher Lloyd‘s bratty Sorry I’m Late, Coldplay‘s chilling Ghost Stories, Lily Allen‘s social commentary-laden Sheezus and the King Of Pop Michael Jackson‘s posthumous Xscape.

Now we want to know: Which one takes the crown for May’s best album? It’s time for you to decide.

Place your vote below. We’ll announce the winner right here on Thursday, June 5!

Whatcha Say: Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson And Richard Marx Got Our Readers Talking

ffc2e56b0e0164251ed575f1eacdf90d Whatcha Say: Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson And Richard Marx Got Our Readers Talking

Happy Friday, Idolator readers! We hope you’re all about to enjoy a nice long weekend away. As always, there was much to talk about in this week of pop.

We kicked off with a bang on Sunday with the Billboard Music Awards, featuring performances from the likes of everyone from Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez to Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande. Plus, Mariah Carey, Robyn & Royksopp and Cher Lloyd ALL debuted the full streams for their long awaited albums.

Whips and chains evidently excite pop divas Madonna and Katy Perry, who tag-teamed on the surprise cover of V Magazine this week. Lea Michele got sultry in the video for “On My Way.” Michelle Williams got us holy twerking with Kelly, Solange and Beyonce on “Say Yes.” And the winners were officially crowned this week on both The Voice Season 6 and American Idol Season 13!

Right here on Idolator, we had the pleasure of debuting Richard Marx‘s stunning comeback track “Whatever We Started.” Our monthly Magazine Melee is in full swing between Beyonce, Rihanna, Lily Allen, Madonna and Katy Perry and Solange. (Have you voted yet?) Plus, we launched a giveaway for tickets to The Thank You Festival in DC. As always, you guys had plenty to say. Read the week’s best comments below!

:: aerogens was shocked people still cared for will.i.am on Will.i.am Debuts New Song “Birthday”: Listen: “Goodness, I can’t believe there are people who still love his music. After that flop #willpower album and the fiasco that was Britney Jean, he’s lost all credibility in my eyes. What happened to the good ‘ole Black Eyed Peas days?”

:: When Forbes claimed that Iggy was running hip-hop, yeahrightallnite kept it short and sweet on Nicki Minaj Talks ‘Forbes’ Claiming Iggy Azalea Runs Hip-Hop: “No Thank You”: “Iggy has a hot single = she’s running hip-hop? Stick to finance.”

:: While Sarah wished for more girl power: “She could’ve at least gave Iggy some props for achieving some success, something VERY hard for female rappers these days as she should know. But oh well, I guess she isn’t about ” female unity ” as she claimed in the beginning after everyone said she wanted to be the only female rapper doing something on the mainstream, shame.”

:: We made Shan go breathless on Richard Marx Returns With A Vengeance: Watch The Pop Veteran’s “Whatever We Started” Video: “Loved him in the 80′s. Fell in love all over again with his new release. Reminds of a period in my life that still takes my breath away when I think of it.”

:: Christian was somewhat disappointed by Nicki’s soft return on Nicki Minaj’s “Pills N Potions”: Listen: “It’s definitely not a ‘return to hip-hop,’ but it does show a vulnerable side to Nicki we haven’t seen since “Pink Friday.” It brings to mind songs like ‘Your Love,’ and ironically enough, ‘Dear Old Nicki.’”

:: And xSushi was ready to drink to that: “I was expecting something harder, but it’s an enjoyable track for a moment of quiet introspection at the end of a long day. I’ll add it to my “Glass of Wine” playlist. Haha.”

:: While MusicManDave hoped this would bring some success for Miss Minaj: “Now this is a pretty stripped down song from the rap/pop diva. I wasn’t expecting it and came straight out of left field. I like it and should do well on the charts. An emotional ballad with Nicki’s signature print on it.”

:: Pablo found the S&M-themed shoot between Madonna and Katy to be a match made in heaven on Madonna And Katy Perry’s Stunning S&M-Themed ‘V’ Magazine Spread Is Finally Here: “That’s cute, I like them as friends. They’re both kinda bitchy.”

:: Evelyn was quick to qualify Michael Jackson‘s new record on Michael Jackson Becomes The First Solo Artist To Land Top 10 Hits In 5 Different Decades: “Sorry to burst your bubble but CLIFF Richard had NO1 hits in 5 consecutive decades and Top ten hits in 6 Consecutive Decades….. As much as I love Michael Jackson you CANNOT take this accolade away from CLIFF !!!!!!!”

:: Daniel was massively underwhelmed by Cher Lloyd’s latest on Cher Lloyd’s ‘Sorry I’m Late’: Stream The Full Album: “A disappointing follow-up to the very solid Sticks + Stones. No real stand-out tracks, and her sound has been predominantly Americanised, especially with the Demi Lovato-esque Sirens (which I find so underwhelming).”

:: While John was already looking into the future: “I can’t picture anyone beating that record, but I can think of two people who could tie it: Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake.”

:: Tell It Straight told their feelings straight about Selena Gomez on Selena Gomez ‘Takes Back Her Power’ By Posting A Sexy Bikini Pic On Instagram: “Anyone would think this girl had survived a war in Iraq the way she carries on. And I can’t stand all that therapy talk. Just f*$”ing get on with it Selena. You’re a very rich girl, with basic talent who went back to JB of your own free will. It didn’t work out. Cool. Get on with it. Real people are dealing with real s&$”! out here. Oh, and no-one believes you went into rehab because you were addicted to him either. Diva.”

:: And finally, Mark wasn’t buying Charlie Sheen’s weepy tale on Rihanna Is An “Idiot” With A “Bad Wig” According To Charlie Sheen: See The Actor’s Twitter Rant: “He probably snapped his fingers, and said, “Hey Rihanna.” Glad, you could meet me. This must be a big moment for you..Could you grab a pitcher of water, on the way over?”

Michael Jackson Becomes The First Solo Artist To Land Top 10 Hits In 5 Different Decades

cb97a15c2fee200a7f9248c9bfc4eea8 Michael Jackson Becomes The First Solo Artist To Land Top 10 Hits In 5 Different Decades

Just when you thought Michael Jackson has run out of records to break, the King of Pop made history again today (May 21) when Justin Timberlake-assisted disco anthem “Love Never Felt So Good” climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The much-missed music legend became the first artist to land top 10 hits in five different decades.

The Xscape hitmaker scored his first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Got To Be There” in 1971 and revisited the upper reaches of the chart regularly over the next 30 years. Michael reached the top 10 for the last time (while he was alive) with Invincible lead single “You Rock My World” in 2003. Given the advances in technology and MJ’s enduring popularity, it’s not unfathomable that he could extend his streak in decades to come. Watch “Love Never Felt So Good” after the jump.

Will Michael’s latest record ever be beaten? Have your say in the comments below.
