Season 12 of American Idol premiered on January 16, and four months later to the day, Candice Glover was crowned the winner. The 23-year-old Beaufort, South Carolina native’s smooth, soulful vocals helped propel her to being a favorite among this year’s Idol pack early on, and her performances were more often than not praised week after week by judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban.

Last week saw the elimination of third-place contestant Angie Miller, leaving only Candice and Season 12 runner-up Kree Harrison standing in the finale. Texan hopeful Kree, also 23, also emerged as a viewer favorite thanks to her heartfelt, countrified take on her musical selections over the past four months.

One possible early gaffe in Thursday night’s (May 16) Idol finale came when guest performer Aretha Franklin declared Candice “a winner” a full half-hour before host Ryan Seacrest himself officially announced the results of the votes.

Other guest performers throughout the night included current judges Mariah Carey and Keith Urban, former judge Jennifer Lopez (accompanied by Pitbull), The Band Perry, Frankie Valli, Adam Lambert and Jessie J.

Robin Thicke‘s got a stone-cold hit on his hands with “Blurred Lines,” thanks in no small part to the relaxed raciness of the music video. And his appearance on The Voice. Oh, and having Pharrell and T.I. on the track certainly helps, too. But also, it’s just a really good song! And doesn’t it make you feel warm and fuzzy inside when an actual good song is successful?!

Anyway, Thicke brought Pharrell along for a performance of the single on The Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier today (May 16). The singer was decked out in a black suit, while Mr. Neptunes donned a white one and provided falsetto yelps and hypeman hollers. The guys played it cool to start, with a trio of backup model/singers, and then they headed into the crowd to heat things up. Check it out up top.

Class is in session, and now it’s time to sit up straight and get an education! And in the case of Pop School, it’s artists who are teaching you a lesson on their classic hits. Start taking notes!

Kandi penned some absolutely monster hits around the turn of the millennium — and while Destiny’s Child‘s “Bug a Boo” wasn’t her biggest (she gave the group their first Hot 100 #1 single with “Bills, Bills Bills,” but “Bug a Boo” failed to match that song’s chart success, peaking at #33), it is one of her most memorable. Part of the song’s charm then was in the brilliant specificity of the details; now, if they feel deliciously dated, they still capture the zeitgeist marvelously. Between “Bills,” “Bug a Boo” and TLC‘s “No Scrubs,” Kandi specialized in articulating frustrations over a certain type of man — the type who would inspire a woman to throw her pager out the window.

So when Kandi stopped by our studios, we had to quiz her about the history of “Bug a Boo” — and how she ended up in the studio with Beyonce, squashing some potential beef (or tension, at least!) with the girls of Destiny’s Child. Watch up top.

Bruno Mars covers this week’s Entertainment Weekly for the mag’s summer music preview issue. In keeping with the “jungle” aspect of the singer’s Moonshine Jungle World Tour (which starts in June), he’s accompanied by a black leopard. As for what we can expect from his tour? “I don’t think I would feel too comfortable like, wearing a harness,” he joked to EW. “I want the music and the sound to be rockin’, more important than the visual effects and tricks or whatnot. I don’t want to get lost in that. I’ve definitely seen bands before they made money kind of change their thing on the next tour, and I prefer it when it’s a little more raw. We always change it up, you know? It’s live, and that’s a big element of the show.”

Mars is performing his latest single, “Treasure,” at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 19), and then after his huge tour wraps up, it sounds like he hopes to lay low and recover. “I would love to go away for a while and then be able to write a song that I feel just as strongly about as I did with ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ or ‘When I Was Your Man,’” he said.

Britney Spears is scheduled to start recording her new album with will.i.am next week, according to Will himself. The Black Eyed Peas frontman is executive producing the album and told Billboard before they hit the studio, “We’ve had these juicy sessions, where we’ve been bonding, building the trust and comfort. I’ve never worked like this before — not even the Peas.”

The multi-hyphenate previously said he planned to have several lunches with Spears to get a sense of the real Britney and “what she’s excited about in life,” hopefully so they’d emerge with songs that “come from her heart.” His recent Billboard comments expanded on that plan, with him admitting to basically trying to interview the singer: “I said, ‘Let’s talk about things you’ve done in you career, what you’re happy about. Let’s talk about spending time with your kids, let’s talk about your breakup. Let’s talk about how now you’re single, how independent you might feel.’ We started talking about all that stuff. So I said, ‘do you mind if I write this down? I don’t mean to impose but I want to interview you.’”

Taking it one step further, Will said he’s treating the project like working for a brand. “I don’t want to let her down. I just want to do it the way a brand would do it. They wouldn’t say, ‘Take this. Put it out.’ That’s not what you would do. You’d come up with a mood board, the logos, the font, all the other stuff.” The Britney Brand. Sure, why not? We just hope this turns out more like will.i.am’s past work for the Intel brand, and not so much like his Entertainment Tonight partnership.
