St. Lucia‘s music has an uncanny knack of transporting you to a sunny beach in a far-off tropical isle. That breezy brand of late afternoon synth-pop was perfected on buzz tracks like “September” and current single “Elevate” but Jean-Philip Grobler‘s (his real name) debut LP When The Night proves the South African’s sound palette is considerably broader.
Album highlights “Too Close” and title track “When The Night” take you on a slightly darker journey. Those gloomy synth experiments meander aimlessly in the best possible way. Synths chirp like cicadas and Jean-Philip drops “woahs” and “ahhs” at will. It would have been easy to slide into ambient territory but the 30-year-old’s unwavering pop sensibility ensures your never too far from a soaring chorus.
When The Night is equally appropriate for a recovery party or a quiet, late-night listen. What more do you need? Check out the album after the jump.
