Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey — Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.
Right now, most 17 year olds are either (hopefully) studying hard while winding down their 11th grade years or getting ready to graduate high school altogether. But most teenagers aren’t Cole Plante. The Los Angeles native is not only a track runner and member of the Beverly Hills High marching band, he’s also a rising-star DJ who’s released two singles through Disney’s Hollywood Records label in the past year. And that’s when he’s actually back home. Right now Plante is on the road, opening for Demi Lovato for her Neon Lights Tour, along with Fifth Harmony and Little Mix.
While in town last week for Demi’s New York stop, Cole stopped by the Idolator studio to discuss his latest single “If I Fall,” a collaboration with singer Ruby O’Dell and Hungarian dance maestros Myon & Shane 54. We also got some pretty good scoop on what he’s working on next…not to mention his ever-changing hair color. Watch our interview with this budding beat-maker above.
HIS LAST NAME: It’s pronounced “PLAHN-tay.”
WHERE HE’S FROM: Los Angeles, CA.
INSTRUMENTS HE PLAYS: Piano, trombone and guitar.
ANOTHER SPORT COLE HAS TRIED OUT: Fencing, though he says he quit because he “sucked.”
HIS FIRST COLLABORATION WITH MYON & SHANE 54: “Lie To Me,” his lush EDM single with Koko LaRoo on vocals. It was released last year.
THE FIRST TIME HE MET DEMI LOVATO: The Hollywood Records labelmates didn’t meet until heading out together on Demi’s current Neon Lights Tour, which wraps on May 17 at Mexico’s Arena Ciudad De Monterrey.
COLE’S CURRENT SINGLE: “If I Fall.” Plante told us the following about the song’s vocalist Ruby O’Dell: “What was given to me was a vocal by her — just straight-up vocal, no music around it… From there I wrote piano around it, just to get an idea of how the song would go. Then I sent it over to my friends Myon & Shane 54, with whom I collaborated on my last single, ‘Lie To Me’.”
WHAT HE GOT UP TO LAST SUMMER: Oh, you know — just DJ-ing at Lollapalooza alongside Skrillex and recording with Perry Farrell.
COLE’S SUMMER 2014 PLANS: “No school, thankfully!” he says. Of course, he won’t exactly be lazing about. Plante plans on on doing more producing during his break from classes and crafting more singles in the months to come.
