English singer-songwriter Paloma Faith never made too much of an impact on me with her first album, Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful?, nor her second offering, Picking Up The Pieces, but lo and behold — the soul siren has come back swinging with the first single from her upcoming LP A Perfect Contradiction in the form of ace lead single “Can’t Rely On You,” produced by Pharrell Williams.
The easiest criticism to lobby is that the beat sounds almost suspiciously similar to Robin Thicke‘s ubiquitous “Blurred Lines,” but that’s not a bad thing; in fact, for those of us who objected to Thicke’s sticky falsetto and problematic lyrical content in that song, it’s sort of like getting “Blurred Lines” with soulful female vocals, singing better lyrics. In other words, it’s an improvement.
Even more impressive is the video, a dazzlingly weird and left-of-center period piece that executes its high concept with impeccable attention to detail, contrasting the retro flavor of the song with lushly anachronistic visuals. If this is the vibe Faith intends to deliver with her next album, expect to see her name on a lot more stateside lips.
