Miguel wanders through Hollywood in his new video for “Simple Things.” So does Sports Illustrated model Gigi Hadid. But the farther they wander away from the Walk of Fame, the more romantic that “Simple Things” becomes. Its black-and-white footage, with close-ups of their rugged good looks and wide-angle shots of the scenery (strip malls, a neighborhood game of cee-lo), slowly unfolds until the two end up at the beach. It’s like Lana Del Rey‘s “West Coast” video without the actual fire, or the best of Levi’s 501 commercials.
Hadid had starred in another video recently, too – for Cody Simpson‘s cringeworthy “Surfboard.” The two of them had actually been dating for one year, and apparently they had to be told to stop kissing on set, only to announce their breakup shortly thereafter. (They both had “too crazy” schedules, plus Simpson “needed to experience life.”) Miguel doesn’t actually make a move on Hadid, but “Simple Things” ends up being a far better video because of it. Simpson attempts in “Surfboard” to sell this idea that he’s a grown sex object now, while Miguel refuses to try that hard.
