Mariah Carey covers Billboard‘s May 3 issue, and inside she reveals a new plan for her forthcoming 14th album, and it’s being described as a Beyonce-style release. According to the magazine, “Carey will be taking a surprise approach to the project by revealing her new album’s title, track listing, artwork and music all at once via to-be-announced digital partners (a physical release at retail is expected the following week.)” Um, if you announce that it’s going to be a Beyonce-style release, then it’s not a Beyonce-style release.
Anyway, Carey’s thinking behind the strategy? After The Art Of Letting Go‘s perpetual delays and underperforming singles, it seems her fans aren’t the only ones frustrated, so she wants to take control and present it as a singular project. “I have to be the one that announces this, especially the title,” she said, adding, “With this particular album I want my fans to hear it as a body of work.”
She also revealed details about collaborators. In addition to Jermaine Dupri and Rodney Jerkins, there’s production from Hit-Boy and Mike Will Made It, plus features from Wale, Nas and more.
