Class is in session, and now it’s time to sit up straight and get an education! And in the case of Pop School, it’s artists who are teaching you a lesson on their classic hits. Start taking notes!

Both the movie Drive and its refreshing, retro-electro soundtrack acquired quite the cult following when the flashy Ryan Gosling vehicle crashed into theaters in fall 2011. Those who succumbed to the moody music were smitten right from the opening credits, as main character Driver cruises the city streets of Los Angeles in the late hours while listening to “Nightcall,” a ghostly exchange between French artist Kavinsky and CSS frontwoman Lovefoxxx. Co-production by Daft Punk‘s Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo helped give the track an added robot-pop sheen.

While stopping by Idolator’s studio for a chat about new CSS album Planta (purchase here), Lovefoxxx explained that it was a long road to getting “Nightcall” recorded — and the song wasn’t just some run-of-the-mill duet: “They were like this: ‘You and Kavinsky were a couple and he died in a car accident in 1984. So now you’re married [to someone else] and have kids, but you’re very uninspired…and he calls you. So you gotta put that in the vocal’!”

Originally released in 2010, “Nightcall” later went on to be prominently featured in Drive. Watch Lovefoxxx discuss working both with Kavinsky and her thoughts on the movie above, and let us know how you’d grade the latest edition of Pop School below!
