Lily Allen has had something of a busy Internet week, starting a blog-clearinghouse for artists’ views on file sharing and getting into rows with “Everything Must Be Free For Me” types as a result of her saying that she kind of was not into the idea of people not paying for her record. Yesterday she put up a post on the site and had a throwaway line that piqued some curiosity: “Just so you know, I have not renegotiated my record contract and have no plans to make another record (applause).” What?
Well, first things first, this isn’t the first time that Allen has threatened to give up the record-making business. Which is probably what prompted our pals at Popjustice to get in touch with Allen’s rep, who had this to say about the whole thing:
“She is not quitting pop music and is still promoting her current album, which is why she said she is not thinking ahead to another record.”
Sure, there’s a credibility issue thanks to the above statement being a denial from a publicist that’s probably at least invested in maintaining Allen’s career as a living thing. But after how good It’s Not Me, It’s You was, and how much growth it showed, she can’t quit now! Plus who’s going to assist me in my quest to mock Perez Hilton at every turn?
One thing Allen has quit for sure: Because she’s decided to “pass the baton” of file-sharing-related discussions on to other artists and because there’s nobody meaner on the Internet than a kid who can’t have his free candy, she quit the blog, even going so far as to take the old-school “I quit” tack of deleting all its old posts.
If Lily Allen quits music we are going to be severely fucked off [Popjustice]
