Lil Wayne & Drake Compare Themselves To Drug Kingpins & One Direction (!) In “Believe Me”: Listen

057dac2c6817665e7293cd5f5a4b6061 Lil Wayne & Drake Compare Themselves To Drug Kingpins & One Direction (!) In “Believe Me”: Listen

What’s left for Lil Wayne to prove? In “Believe Me,” the first single off his (purported) last album Tha Carter V, he focuses on his kingpin status (“Shoutout, Capone and Noriega”), enormous wealth (two Ferraris) and tongue-twisting wordplay. “Diamonds on my Rollie / face, can I be exfoliated? They think I’m associated, I’m the one who orchestrated,” he insists.

Then, as if to reestablish his behind-the-scenes role, he steps to the side – and lets Drake deliver shorter, punchier verses for a second (!) time. (Hear the song below.)

Drake’s glad to do so, too. As his verses reveal, he needs to remind the likes of Jay Z and Rolling Stone that he’s a (pop) star. “Mother-fuck the award shows and mother-fuck the press,” he crows, in between boasts of his rigorous touring schedule. This includes comparisons to Nirvana, Coldplay and more: “Doesn’t matter, could be winter or the summer / On the road, I do One Direction numbers.”

So while they likely joined together for solidarity’s sake (Young Money‘s “Bed Rock” came out five years ago!), Lil Wayne focuses on his street-earned wealth, as Drake paces through thoughts of his stadium tours – the key difference between rap’s past and present concerns.
