Though she has been everywhere this year, it feels like it’s been forever since we’ve seen a Lana Del Rey performance. The real/imagined drought ends tonight (November 27), as she performed “Ride” on the BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland (just over a year ago she made her television debut on that show).
The hot mic early on had us cringing, thinking we were about to witness another SNL-level debacle. What we got was more of a mixed bag. Lana’s voice sounded rich and steady on the refrain, but oh that bridge at the 3:30 mark. She really struggled with the high notes, which caused her to revert back to her warbly, wavering sound of yore. It wasn’t exactly a “tumble down the stairs” sort of thing, more of a ”stumble up the stairs and recover with your hand” moment, but still, we had such high hopes after the great Paradise EP.
