It’s been over three years since we last heard a peep from JoJo. Well, maybe not a peep—she did resurface briefly in June to post a YouTube video where she screeches (literally) about her frustrations with her record label.
The fine folks over at Rap-Up were able to nab the 19-year-old singer, who’s currently featured on Timbaland’s Shock Value II, for a video interview (watch it below). In it she details the “really long, drawn out, dramatic, stressful time” she’s had dealing with music business drama and the long road she’s traveled to set up the release of her third album All I Want Is Everything.
JoJo’s always been surprisingly mature, if not a bit of a lyrical Lolita. (”I was young and in love, I gave you everything,” she sings in “Too Little Too Late,” which was released when she was 15.) So it’s good to hear it won’t be too long before she’s foisting another set of adult-oriented pop upon the world—and that she has a backup plan in case the whole chanteuse thing doesn’t work out.
“I committed to Northeastern University this year,” JoJo tells Rap-Up. “I’m deferring for a year… I was so broken down and upset about some things that were going on that I was just gonna go to school and maybe take four years and try to do it again after. But my heart wasn’t fully satisfied with that.”
In the second part of the interview, JoJo talks about working with the “fabulous” Timbaland and Pharrell on her upcoming album—due at some point in the new year—and “taking the reins” on her career.
All very good news. And it’s about time we heard from the original tween queen of the ’00s—and one who likely actually knows a Jay-Z song or two—again.
