“You’re making me lose my flow, but I’m gonna get it back in a minute,” Jay Z says in his ten-minute “Picasso Baby” video, which debuted August 2 on HBO. The new clip acts as a highlight reel from last month’s six-hour performance inside New York’s Pace Gallery, where he rapped the Magna Carta Holy Grail track to each individual audience member.
Jay Z rarely breaks a sweat when performing live, if anywhere. (Fans who caught the Watch the Throne tour also know what it is, especially compared to Kanye West.) So when art dealer Sandra Gering, wearing rose-colored glasses and a wide grin, sat down and actually caught the rapper off guard, her presence added charm to an already endearing but still-slick video — pardon, “performance art film.”
Other highlights continued to show how different worlds — art and commerce; street and high-end sensibilities; music, television and film; the list goes on — collided for this particular event. See The Wire actor Michael K. Williams cheering Hov on during his lyrical recovery; Hov’s close contact with performance artist (and video inspiration) Marina Abramovic; J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons looking stoked.
