Jay-Z And 6 Other Music Artists That Support Gay Marriage

President Barack Obama isn’t the only one making headlines for speaking out in favor of gay marriage. During an interview with CNNJay-Z shared his support of gay people being able to get married, calling the issue “something that’s still holding the country back. What people do in their own home is their business.” (Personally, in our home we like to pretend we live large like the Knowles-Carters.)

Hova is not alone in this — in fact, many of pop’s biggest stars have taken it upon themselves to take a stand for equality in marriage. See what Pink, Miley Cyrus, Adam Levine and more have said in support of gay rights.

Lady Gaga: Before the marriage equality bill was passed in New York, Mother Monster (who has never shied away from her stance on the issue — just listen to the lyrics to “Born This Way”) tweeted: “I am so proud to be a New Yorker! One step closer to equality and toward the legalization of Gay Marriage in America. Full Equality. Unity.”

Miley Cyrus: The un-tameable pop star got inked last year with an equal sign to show her support in gay marriage. Later, Miley would write about her tattoo in the March 2012 issue of Glamour: ”I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?”

Adam LevineThis subject hits close to home for the Maroon 5 frontman, as Levine’s brother is gay. In a recent interview with OUT magazine, Adam shared, “The fact that gay marriage isn’t legal everywhere at this point is a joke.”

Pink: The gay wedding in her “Raise Your Glass” music video was inspired by a real life event that touched the pop star. “I threw my best friend’s wedding in my backyard,” recalls the singer. “She is gay and it was a beautiful ceremony. At the end of it, her mom said, ‘Why can’t that be legal?’ and started crying. It was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen and that’s why I’m doing it in my video.”

Ricky Martin: Upon hearing the President’s support of gay marriage, the singer tweeted, “I applaud President @barackobama for affirming that ALL Americans should enjoy equal rights. Historic!” Soon after, the star hosted a fundraising event for Obama in New York, saying, “He knows we’re in this together and that together we’re stronger than divided.”

Adam Lambert: The out-and-proud artist wrote the heartbreaking song “Outlaws Of Love”, off his new album Trespassing, about gay marriage and the struggle for non-heterosexuals to be treated equally in society. ”[The song is] to lament the struggle, and it’s a difficult time now,” he said on VH1′s Morning Buzz. “The LGBT community, in essence, feels outlawed just because of who we’re choosing to love. There’s much bigger battles to fight in this country.” On President Obama’s support of gay marriage, Adam says, “It’s really great, it’s about time, and we should applaud him. It’s a great step, and it sets a wonderful example.”
