Michael Jackson’s brain was missing when his body lay in his golden casket at his memorial service, it was revealed last night.
It has been retained for toxicology tests by experts trying to work out if the King of Pop’s fatal heart attack was caused by painkillers.
Assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said: “As soon as we are done with the brain, we’ll return it. The last I heard, they are not burying the body yet.”
Jacko’s death certificate was signed by sister La Toya, lists the cause of death as deferred.
The whereabouts of the star’s body was unclear last night.
The Sun understands it is in the mortuary at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood’s “cemetery of the stars” where the family held a private service before Tuesday’s gala send-off.
Fans still hope the lack of a burial means Jackson could still be laid to rest at his Neverland ranch in Santa Barbara.
Initial plans were scuppered by state laws which ban burials outside of cemeteries.
As eariler reported, Jackson will be buried wearing one white glove, in his trademark style.
