TLC joined J. Cole at iHeartRadio Music Festival to perform “Crooked Smile” for the first time together. While on stage, TLC’s presence helped stress Cole’s intentions with the Born Sinner song — as the Fayetteville, N.C., rapper said to the festival crowd, “It’s all about when the world tries to tell you that you’re not good enough.”
On stage, Cole said that he “happened” to have “one of the greatest group of all time” on “Crooked Smile.” (TLC’s still the biggest-selling U.S. girl group, ever.) Ultimately though, their iHeartRadio performance showed that only TLC could have taken the hook to task.
After all, with its lyrical aims to eschew the stringent beauty standards enforced by mass media, “Crooked Smile” is essentially TLC‘s “Unpretty,” slightly updated with lines like, “I asked if my skin pale, would I then sell like Eminem or Adele?”
