Coldplay‘s sixth album, Ghost Stories, dropped yesterday (May 19), and the lovelorn LP successfully stripped away many of the more tired aspects of the band’s sound, a transformation sparked at least partly by the dissolution of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow‘s marriage. At nine tracks, it’s a quick and quiet sob session, but the band also released a Target deluxe edition that included the three bonus tracks “Ghost Story,” “All Your Friends” and “O (Part 2 – Reprise).”
The trio of songs hit the Web today, and any of these offerings would’ve been a nice addition to the proper album (especially as a replacement for “A Sky Full Of Stars”). As a “classic” Coldplay acoustic anthem for the rafters, “Ghost Story” may not have fit aesthetically, but its “Every time I try to pull you close, you disappear” refrain certainly would have sounded at home. “All Your Friends,” meanwhile, is loaded with ethereal electronics and mini-starbursts of percussion. As for the “O” reprise, the only difference I can make out is an outro tacked onto the original outro.
