Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow have been very visible publicly lately…just not together. Today the couple, who began dating in 2002 and married late in 2003, announced that they have decided to make a “conscious uncoupling,” per a joint update from the pair on Paltrow’s website GOOP.
“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” Paltrow and Martin’s statement reads. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.”
Gwyneth most recently had returned to Glee, reprising her role as Holly Holiday in last week’s milestone 100th episode of the musical dramedy. The episode is a two-parter, the second part of which airs tonight (March 25) on Fox.
Martin’s band Coldplay, meanwhile, performed earlier this month at the iTunes Festival that ran alongside Austin’s annual South By Southwest fest. The English pop-rockers have made their new single “Magic” available on iTunes, ahead of the May 20 release of their sixth studio album Ghost Stories.
The rest of Paltrow and Martin’s statement reads as follows:
We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.
Gwyneth and Chris’ daughter Apple Martin was born in 2004, while their son Moses was born two years later. Fans of the famous pair no doubt felt a bittersweet sting at the sight of the following image, shot by photographer Hilary Weeks, which rounded out the couple’s joint update.
