Green Day sure have a lot on their plate this past year: promoting 21st Century Breakdown, embarking on a world tour, developing a Broadway musical based on their songs, raking up the Grammy noms and sweeping Rolling Stone readers’ end-of-the-decade poll. Now the punk-pop punks are following in The Beatles’ footsteps by annoucing their own Rock Band game at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards this past weekend. Check out Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt’s dead-on likenesses in the above preview clip of Green Day: Rock Band. Finally, you won’t have to compete against thousands of other Green Day fans for the chance to shout “Longview” into a mic.
The game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii in 2010, and will feature songs from all of their eight studio albums. Rock Band is released through Harmonix, not Activision like Band Hero and Guitar Hero, so hopefully Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t have to worry about his avatar being forced to sing Blondie songs against his will.
One musician we can fully assume will be picking up the game will by Sean Kingston protege, Iyaz, whose desperate to work with the band on his upcoming 2010 release. “It most definitely will happen,” Iyaz told The Boom Box at September’s VMAs (although they’re reporting it now, how timely). “Most definitely will happen. I want to switch it up. I want them to go island, and I’m gonna go Green Day.”
He might have some serious problems pinning Billie Joe & Co. down, since the band isn’t really known for teaming up with other acts—their last (and pretty much only) collaboration was 2006’s “The Saints Are Coming” with U2. And sorry, Iyaz, you are no U2. (Yet.)
