Los Angeles County Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said the man shot and killed Monday afternoon outside the Beverly Center was 21-year-old Roderick Anthony Burton II.

According to a report in TMZ, on Monday evening LAX police spotted Berry in Terminal 1. As cops approached him, he reportedly raised his hands and told cops not to shoot, but that he had a 9 millimeter handgun in his waistband.

According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, another male and a female with Berry were also being questioned, but had not been charged in connection with the shooting.

Vannasing says Dolla real name Roderick Anthony Burton II, 21 was waiting at a valet stand with another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, after a shopping trip when a gunman shot him in the head.

Police initially said the victim and the gunman were involved in a spontaneous argument before the gunman attacked and fled in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

But a report from MyFOXLA says the alleged gunman may have known the slain rapper.Vannasing said Burton was in Los Angeles working on his debut album, Another Day, Another Dolla.

Burton worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film “Step Up” and recently released two singles with the singer Akon: “Like This” and “She So Fine.” After having a brief deal with the now defunct Elektra label, he was signed to Akon’s label, Konvict Music. He also briefly modeled for Diddy’s successful fashion line Sean John.

Despite his rising fame, Burton’s life had been wrought with tragedy. Born in Chicago, his twin sibling died at birth. Shortly afterward, the family relocated to Los Angeles in search of a better life. But at just five years old, while sitting on his parents’ bed with his sister Divinity, Burton’s father took his own life. The family again moved to Atlanta, where at just ten years old, he was already breaking the law to help support his family, who struggled financially. His sister was later sentenced to several years in prison for an altercation with police, according to his biography on MySpace.

Dolla also posted a video about “beef” on YouTube, where he discussed a physical altercation following an awards show. It is unclear whether the video has any connection to his murder.
