When last we heard from Eminem — that would be last night, when his upcoming Marshall Mathers LP 2 (out November 5) was teased during the MTV Video Music Awards — there was but only a snippet of new single “Berzerk” to be had. Now the full track is available, and the rowdy, Billy Squier-sampling track (yep, that’s 1981 classic rock staple “The Stroke” you’re hearing throughout) more than lives up to its title.
“Now the shit’s about to kick-off, this party looks wack / let’s take it back to straight hip hop and start it from scratch,” Em rants right at the offset, on a track that you’d be forgiven for mistaking for some lost rap-rock cut from the Beastie Boys‘ Licensed To Ill sessions. (And you wouldn’t be too off-base, given that Rick Rubin is executive-producing MML2, along with Dr. Dre.)
Throughout the rest of “Berzerk,” the Detroit MC proceeds to go absolutely ape-shit HAM atop buzzsaw-sharp guitar samples and bombastic beats. The madness begins below.
