Yesterday Twitter was aflutter with the possibility of an all-star collab called “Syllables”, featuring Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. Voila! Less than a day later the track dropped on the net. No word yet if this is from Dr. Dre’s forthcoming Detox, but that won’t stop you from soaking it up anyway. Jump below to listen to song about the sorry state of songwriting.
Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo & Ca$his – Syllables
“If we have to dumb down our style and ABC it then so be it / Because these days these kids, jeez, they don’t give a shit about lyrics, just want to hear a beat and that’s it,” opens Eminem on the minimalist track with a steady drum beat. “All we know is the chorus because the chorus repeats the same four words for us.”
The track seems to be a statement on terribly written songs with inane lyrics clouding the Top 40 nowadays. Even the chorus “Shorty, I love you, will you love me, too” is a sarcastic nod to how watered down and lame the lyrics to many pop songs are. (We won’t name names, but we have a few guesses.)
Although we get what Em & Co are saying… is it so wrong to like a fresh beat to move to? Dare we say this one could use a more exciting one.
