Ed Sheeran previously indicated that his next album would be hip-hop influened and more beat-centric, but when x lead single “Sing” finally premiered, it was still shocking to hear the sensitive British crooner channeling Justified-era JT over Pharrell‘s jittery funk production — and doing it pretty well!
But how would the transition fare in a live setting? Tonight (April 12) on Saturday Night Live we found out, as Sheeran performed the song live for the first time. He started off as usual, with just his guitar and his voice, before the backing band and vocalists joined in by the chorus. After that it was kind of a blast! (He even pulled off that sorta-rapped verse.) This dude’s no one-trick pony.
For his second song, Sheeran debuted “Don’t,” and it had an equally bouncy groove and another hefty dose of sing-rapping.
