Drake Says He Has “Aspirations To Be Marvin Gaye,” Won’t Ever Release A “Straight Rap Album”

Drake continues to spill even more details about his forthcoming third album Nothing Was The Same, this time in a new interview with MTV News. He claims the new album is better than his Grammy-winning 2011 cut Take Care, which gives it incredibly high expectations. The rapper (who also loves to sing, see “Hold On We’re Going Home”) also says that he’ll never make a “straight rap album,” as he hopes to become the next Marvin Gaye. Whatever you say, Aubrey.

Take Care is a great album, but I listen to it and realize where I can do better, and I think I’ve done better on [Nothing Was the Same],” he told MTV. “If you want to listen to Drake music for the rest of your life, I welcome it… but just don’t ever be surprised when I’m singing or using melody; I’m doing that on this album.”

Drake continues, “This album is not some straight rap album. I’ll never do a straight rap album; that’s now how I came into this. I make songs for people. I have aspirations to be Marvin Gaye in the back of my head. So I just want to sing the world’s triumphs and problems on one record and hopefully Nothing Was The Same [can be] the soundtrack to their life.”

Look out for Drake’s third album, Nothing Was The Same, on September 24. In the meantime, view the official tracklist here.
