David Letterman made an apology to his wife, Regina Lasko, on the air Monday during the taping of his late night talk show. Read more of what Letterman had to say and see video of his apology below.
After the extortion attempt and Letterman’s affairs with his interns revealed, Letterman says his wife Regina has been “horribly hurt” and adds, “I’ve got my work cut out for me” to mend the relationship.
Letterman made these comments at the beginning of his taped Monday night show.
David also apologized to the members of his staff saying, “I’m terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position.” He labeled his mistake as inadvertent because “I just wasn’t thinking ahead.” He thanked the staff for being supportive and for “putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.”
The lawyer for the man that attempted to extort Letterman has made a threat to “put forward evidence” that Mr. Letterman had engaged in sexual harassment of members of his staff.
Gerald Shargel, the lawyer for Robert Joel Halderman, said in a telephone interview Monday, “I do have evidence of that. I’ll be sharing that in a courtroom.”
The lawyer added, “He had a relationship with my client’s girlfriend.” Of course he is referring to Halderman’s live-in girlfriend, Stephanie Birkitt.
“I just wanted to say, essentially, don’t rush to judgment,” Mr. Shargel said. “The public is not getting the full story from David Letterman.”
On NBC’s “Today” show, Mr. Shargel said David Letterman was a master of manipulation.
“He’s a master at manipulating audiences,” Mr. Shargel said. “That’s what he does for a living. So to think that David Letterman gave the entire story and there’s nothing more to be said is simply wrong.”
Mr. Shargel said in the telephone interview he would wait for a trial to give “the full story,” adding, “I have a lot of questions for David Letterman,” he said.
New details yesterday included rumors of a “bachelor pad” above the Ed Sullivan theater.
