Sky Ferreira Just Destroyed Everyone Who Said Her “I Blame Myself” Video Is Racist

67a2afaaa1c9e21d935339c132ab97c5 Sky Ferreira Just Destroyed Everyone Who Said Her “I Blame Myself” Video Is Racist

This is why we can’t have nice things. Or, everything is embarrassing, you might say. Sky Ferreira released her thoroughly badass “I Blame Myself” video yesterday, and within about two seconds it was being labeled by some viewers as “racist.” The main issue is that the visual finds the (very) white Ferreira in the role of gang leader/dance commander in Compton, and save for a couple stray characters like a cop, the actors are not white, including her cadre of black backup dancers.

So, like Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen before her, Ferreira was accused of using non-white performers as props (on a related note: she’s the only female in the vid, so does that mean she’s using males as props and thus is SEXIST TOO?). And like those stars before her, Ferreira responded by saying the roles were filled based on who had the most talent, regardless of skin color.

But the critiques didn’t stop, so she didn’t stop with that simple explanation. Sky took to Facebook last night (April 16) to fully defend the video, highlighting her family makeup and upbringing, and absolutely laying into those who cried racism in the process. “Stop trying to search for something that isn’t there… My brother is half black. My cousins are black. My family is Latina & Native American. Some of my family is in the video. I wasn’t raised in a ‘white’ household,” she wrote. “Should I consciously only cast white dancers from now on?… Please do research before you make such shitty accusations about people.”

Read her whole rebuttal below, it’s worth it.

Thank you so much for the love & support of the video. It’s something that means a lot to me. I’ve never seen such a big response from my fans before
I’ve been reading some of the responses and I had a few thoughts:

Some people are accusing of being racist. I usually do not need to feel the need to explain myself(which I’m not) but I DO feel the need to share my thoughts on the situation. Nothing upsets me more than being called racist because that is one of the most hateful things anyone can be. Not only do I find it insulting towards myself but I also feel insulted for the actors & dancers & my family in the video. No, I did not use black back up dancers as “props”. I never have and never will look at any human being as a prop. That’s disgusting. It’s also an idea that has never crossed my mind, which is what I find questionable of the people telling me that I did so.Dancers are objects?!?!?! How dare you! Dancers make things come to life. If they were white would they be considered “props”? I auditioned a bunch of dancers, all races & my dancers were the best ones. I know that you have to be socially aware & mindful of others but when I look at this video I don’t see race as a issue.Stop trying to search for something that isn’t there. Comments like “rich little white girl exploiting the black people & the ghetto”…I never exploited anyone & I don’t use people in any shape or form. My brother is half black. My cousins are black. My family is Latina & Native American. Some of my family is in the video.I wasn’t raised in a “white” house hold & I’m not little & I have financially supported myself since I was 15 years old. I’m a woman, not a fucking little girl. Because I have pale skin & green eyes doesn’t mean I was raised in Beverly Hills and have Swedish film investor parents or whatever some have created in their minds. Would you feel more at ease if I danced with a bunch blonde white boys at a mall? Should I consciously only cast white dancers for now on? If I’m racist does that mean you’re pro-segregation?! I’m from LA & shot the video there. I referenced 90s hip hop videos and Michael Jackson because both of those things inspire me & played a big part of my childhood. The only thing I’m sorry for is if this post seems to come off self defensive, which it isn’t meant to be…but I had to share these thoughts because it drove me up the wall. Don’t demean the actors & dancers in the video. They are more well spoken & aware than you and I will ever be. Please do research before you make such shitty accusations about people. Anyways…Thank you SSENSE & Atom Factory Management & Grant Singer for making this video happen. We have been trying to make it for a while & I’m so glad I get to share it with the world now <3333333

Courtney Love Was Instrumental In Lady Gaga’s Art Awakening, Says Courtney Love

83fd4dc291d56cc40f3041b377a337d1 Courtney Love Was Instrumental In Lady Gaga’s Art Awakening, Says Courtney Love

Courtney Love was enjoying a rare wave of good will following Nirvana‘s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony where she was booed by a bunch of lunkheads and buried the hatchet with Dave Grohl. But fear not, Love is hoping to right the ship and get back to pissing everyone off. First, video surfaced of the Hole front woman questioning Bruce Springsteen‘s rock bona fides because “saxophones don’t belong in rock ‘n roll.” And now she’ll likely feel the wrath of the Little Monsters after indicating she’s somewhat responsible for Lady Gaga‘s art awakening, saying she served as Gaga’s facilitator into the art world.

“I’m friendly with [Lady Gaga]. She started hanging out with a lot of my art friends and I think it influenced her and that’s great but it doesn’t necessarily translate for the masses,” she told Britain’s Gay Times. “She tried to take it on and sort of acclimate it into pop.”

It’s cool that Love is complimenting Gaga, and there’s no reason to believe the Hole singer didn’t introduce Gaga to some artists. But it’s only fair to point out that Gaga’s been on that weird art freak/theater geek grind for a few years now. Remember this? Or this?

For more on Gaga’s development, we checked in with one of her first supporters in the music industry, Akon:

7 Questions With Kodaline: Breakthrough Hit “All I Want”, Touring America & Irish Bands

6ec7c0d4da18cf5252e2bc97453904a1 7 Questions With Kodaline: Breakthrough Hit “All I Want”, Touring America & Irish Bands

From U2 to The Cranberries, Ireland has a long history of producing great bands. The latest act to add to that impressive list is Dublin-based quartet Kodaline. They broke big in Europe last year with critically acclaimed debut LP In A Perfect World and landed a string of radio hits with emotional rock anthems like “High Hopes” and “Love Like This”.

The band was recently stateside to promote new single “All I Want” and dropped by the Idolator studio for a quick chat between gigs. The guys opened up about their wackiest tour experiences, talked about those flattering comparisons to Coldplay and waxed lyrical about the state of American beer. (In short, they think our Guinness stinks). Watch up top.

Do you love Kodaline? Agree with their beer assessment? Want to walk down the aisle to one of their love songs? Let us know the answer to one or more of these questions in the comments below.

‘American Idol’ Recap: Jena Irene, Alex Preston & C.J. Harris Get High Marks, Demi Lovato Is A Guest Judge

7daa80de00750a5c58a1794c2f558b05 ‘American Idol’ Recap: Jena Irene, Alex Preston & C.J. Harris Get High Marks, Demi Lovato Is A Guest Judge

After bidding a tearful farewell (on my part at least) to Malaya Watson, only seven contestants are left. And since Malaya was clearly my favorite, I’m struggling to figure out who of the remaining finalists deserve my love and support. This week’s theme is Competitor’s Pick, meaning that the kiddos have to select their song choice for the evening from a list compiled by their fellow six competitors. And, there are some super random guest appearances from the likes of Demi Lovato and Terry Bradshaw.

Host Ryan Seacrest welcomes the singers still in the running, bringing all of them to the stage. Their entrance is followed by the arrival of the celebrity judges, Harry Connick Jr., Keith Urban and the always flawless Jennifer Lopez, who is a lemony delight in a shiny yellow dress.

We see American Idol mentor Randy Jackson chatting with the kids in a garden party as they all share the songs they have selected for their buddies/secret enemies. Caleb Johnson is the first singer to take to the stage with “Family Tree” by Kings of Leon,as picked by Alex Preston. As always, Caleb sings his glorious rock and roll heart out. He should thank Alex for picking a song that really showcases his crazy pipes while still sounding modern. America, I think I have a new favorite.

Keith immediately congratulates Caleb on the song choice and calls him a “consistent, dynamic performer.” Jennifer tells him, “That was pretty amazing. Good job!” Even Harry was impressed with this start to the show.

Next to perform is Jessica Meuse. The southern-fried rocker chick has decided to sing Miranda Lambert‘s “Gunpowder And Lead,” as suggested by Sam Woolf. As soon as she launches into the chorus, it becomes clear that this is one of her best song choices so far. Bonus points to whoever suggested the wind and smoke machines. Also, for anyone who’s remotely old enough to remember the Lady Lovely Locks cartoon (I’m sure none of you are), Jessica is a dead ringer for villainess, Duchess Ravenwaves. This has me totally biased toward her.

JLo says that Jess was “a little bit off, vocally.” She thought it wasn’t “natural.” Harry also feels the same way. He blames a “lack of rhythmic delivery.” He basically says she has no rhythm. Keith starts off by praising her voice, but he too felt that her energy wasn’t there. Wow, I totally gauged that performance incorrectly.

The audience is then surprised by a visit by pop star and former X-Factor judge, Demi Lovato, who’s basically just there to hang out. She joins Randy and the awaiting contestants in the lounge.

Sam and Alex take to the stage to perform “Let Her Go” by Passenger as a duet. In an attempt to recreate the casual rehearsal space in which the boys frequently jam together, Idol has the the two of them sitting on a couch on stage as they perform. When they finish their song, Sam receives female screams of “We love you Sam!” Harry thought it was too “saccharine.” He calls it simply “OK.” Keith calls it “chintzy.” JLo pipes in with, “I think the girls loved it.” Ryan puts Demi on the spot to give feedback. She liked the energy, wanted to see more effort, but says they sound good together.

After a commercial break, Ryan introduces Terry Bradshaw. Huh? This is beyond random. Back to singing. Caleb’s selected “Gravity” by John Mayer for C.J. Harris, who has returned to the stage with his trusty guitar. Keith loves it. Jennifer thinks he’s growing more comfortable every week. Harry praises his ability to connect with the audience and calls it his “best performance to date.”

Ronda Rousey makes an appearance briefly in the audience. While it really makes no sense that she’s there except for the UFC affiliation with Fox, I don’t care because she’s the shit.

Dexter Roberts is next and he’s singing a selection from C.J. Harris, “Muckalee Creek Water”  by Luke Bryan. Keith liked the song, but cautions him not to over-sing. JLo said she liked the “darker quality” of the choice but wants him to push himself harder. Harry wants him to sing more complex melodies.

It’s clear the show’s stylists are struggling to figure out how to dress Jena Irene. Her outfits just keep getting weirder. I feel like someone’s chasing her backstage before the show with some pinking shears and a bedazzler and just going to town on her outfits. Her first look tonight is gladiator diaper.

Jena and Caleb have teamed together for their duet. During their little interaction, I will say that the fact that Caleb is supposedly taking her to prom is beyond adorable. They clearly have crushes on each other. #Awwww  The song they sing together is “Gimme Shelter” by The Rolling Stones. Despite her weird outfit, Jena’s hair and makeup are perfect. JLo loves their energy together, but Keith wants them to let loose a little bit more. Harry agrees.

Alex Preston, shaking off the less than stellar review of his duet with Sam, takes to the stage for his version of Ed Sheeran‘s “A Team,” the song choice provided by Dexter. When he finishes, JLo can barely start her critique because the audience is going nuts. All of the judges call is a perfect song choice. In fact, it’s Harry’s favorite of the night. Keith praises how well he made the song his own.

Jessica picked “Sail Away” by David Gray for teen heartthrob Sam Woolf. Harry commends his improvement but didn’t think the song choice was great. Keith also likes how much progress he’s made. Jennifer appreciated the nuance of his performance.

Mixing it up, the three Alabama natives, Jessica, C.J. and Dexter are up for a trio. They join forces for “Compass” by Lady Antebellum, complete with a costume change. Harry tells them, “It simply wasn’t good.” He says they were out of tune. On a softer note, Keith says the singing wasn’t great, but enjoyed what they did separately. When Demi is called upon to judge, she compliments Jessica’s voice but says that they never came together as a group.

We return from commercial break to see Terry Bradshaw playing with a guitar. I say “playing with” because he’s not actually playing it.

Jena is singing “Creep” by Radiohead as selected by her prom date, Caleb. She starts off at the piano. I have to say, this is actually one of my favorites of hers. JLo is totally rocking out. Both Jennifer and Keith stand up to applaud Jena. Her boooooooyfriend, Caleb, gives her a bashful smile. It’s clear the judges loved it unanimously, even grumpy old Harry her calls her “a phenomenal talent.”

All in all, it looks like C.J., Alex and Jena delivered the judges’ favorite performances of the evening. Caleb was strong as usual, and there were special appearances by Terry Bradshaw and Demi Lovato that made no sense. For the rest of the season, I’ll be keeping a close eye on the romance developing between Jena and Caleb. As for you, make sure to vote and join me for tomorrow for a recap of tonight’s results show.

Taylor Swift Makes A Surprise Appearance At A Fan’s Bridal Shower: Watch The Adorable Video

a9b5ee9cf06ce0ba8e0542d2f5addb50 Taylor Swift Makes A Surprise Appearance At A Fan’s Bridal Shower: Watch The Adorable Video

No wonder Taylor Swift‘s mega-loyal fans do wacky things like buy physical copies of her albums and legally download her songs. The Red diva has got their back. Take long-time Swiftie Gena Gabrielle. She invited the country-pop superstar to her bridal shower on a whim, and was visibly amazed when Tay actually turned up.

There’s so much to love about this. For starters, Taylor actually reads her fan-mail. (At least, sometimes). She also whipped up a batch of her own cookies for the bride-to-be and good-naturedly mingled with her friends and family at the Ohio shindig. While filming the event makes it seem somewhat calculated, who really cares when Gena quite obviously had the best day of her life? Watch up top.

Do you admire Tay’s dedication to her fans? Let us know in the comments below.

8 (Relatively) Obscure Collabs Beyonce And Jay Z Could Perform If Their Joint Tour Happens

df4641b8866cc20780f34aa7d0a885a7 8 (Relatively) Obscure Collabs Beyonce And Jay Z Could Perform If Their Joint Tour Happens

A Page Six report that Beyonce and Jay Z could be joining forces for a 20-date summer tour had the internet buzzing overtime today (April 16). It sounds almost too good to be true but the Los Angeles Times also chimed in — predicting that The Mr. & Mrs. Carter Show would kick off on June 13 in Atlanta and wrap up on August 6 in San Francisco. They cited an inside source.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up in case this falls through but it’s hard not to wonder about the setlist. Obviously Bey and Jay would perform their own hits but the power couple finally has ample opportunity to tackle any (or all) of their brilliant collaborations. While everyone knows “Crazy In Love” and “Drunk In Love” (I hope), the duo has joined forces on at least eight other times. Peruse our list after the jump and please note that the songs are ranked in no particular order.

8. “Hollywood” (2007)

This underrated Jayonce gem was the fourth and final single from Hov’s Kingdom Come LP. Amazingly, given their combined star power, it struggled to crack the Billboard Hot 100 but became a minor hit in Australia. A solo version of “Hollywood” was later included on the deluxe edition of Beyonce’s B’day album. This is definitely worth a revisit.

7. That’s How You Like It (2003)

Let’s be real. There’s more chance of Bey and Jay covering “Islands In The Stream” (actually that would be amazing!) than revisiting this harmless piece of filler from the iTunes-conquering diva’s Dangerously In Love album. That being said, it’s a cute enough trip down memory lane.

6. “Lift Off” (2011)

I’m still bitter this wasn’t released as single. “Lift Off” was my favorite track on Jay Z and Kanye West‘s trail-blazing Watch The Throne LP and holds up as one of the duo/trio’s best collaborations. There’s a glorious sample, a killer chorus and a plethora of razor-sharp verses. What more do you need?

5. “Deju Vu” (2006)

Ok, ok. “Deja Vu” is hardly obscure but it was a relative flop outside the US (by Queen Bey’s lofty standards) and people don’t exactly refer to it with the same reverence as, say, “Crazy In Love” or “Drunk In Love”. That being said, B’Day‘s underrated lead single worshipped is by The Hive and would lift the roof off a stadium if performed on Jayonce’s joint tour.

4. “Tom Ford” (2013)

People often forget that Beyonce sings the outro on “Tom Ford”. Probably because she’s credited under her iconic alias Third Ward Trill. The world’s favorite couple has already performed this live, so the chances of it being dusted off again are fairly high.

3. “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” (2002)

I admit that it’s a stretch to label a top 5 hit obscure but 12 years have passed since the brilliant anthem that brought Jay and Bey together rocked the Billboard Hot 100. That means many of their fans were infants when it dropped and missed the magic the first time around. Anyway, it’s always worth revisiting this gem.

2. “Part II (On The Run)” (2013)

I live in hope that Beyonce will one day perform the best song on Magna Carta Holy Grail live. The smoothest and sexiest Jayonce duet performed well on urban radio, crawling to number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year without a video or single piece of promotion. I have my fingers crossed that it’s on the joint tour setlist.

1. “Upgrade U” (2006)

A minor hit from B’Day in 2006, “Upgrade U” remains one of the catchiest hip-hop/pop hits of the past decade. Which could explain why Beyonce keeps performing it and why stans will self-destruct if The Carters don’t perform it together on their, as yet, still imaginary tour.

What’s your favorite Jayonce collaboration? Let us know in the comments below.

Kylie Minogue Literally Glows On The Cover Of ‘Vogue’ Australia

648dc94a4d9c17a128f773aa872b8125 Kylie Minogue Literally Glows On The Cover Of ‘Vogue’ Australia

Kylie Minogue‘s Kiss Me Once promo blitz continues with a stunning Australian Vogue cover shoot. The pop icon literally glows in the gorgeous photo thanks to the her metallic bodice, the golden lighting and her flawless complexion. It’s hard to believe that the veteran kicked off her mega-successful recording career in 1987 because she looks half her age.

When she’s not holding a master class on how to pose for magazine covers, Kylie is still busily working on her Kiss Me Once campaign. Pharrell-produced second single “I Was Gonna Cancel” drops May 12 and she has already commissioned a mind-blowing remix by Aussie electro-pioneers The Presets. See another pic from the diva’s Vogue shoot after the jump.

‘Frozen’ Matches The 10-Week Run Of The ‘Lion King’ Sountrack Atop The Album Chart

d5cb0847f3ffd57f729c9c5e67c6e44f ‘Frozen’ Matches The 10 Week Run Of The ‘Lion King’ Sountrack Atop The Album Chart

Disney has successfully book-ended the past two decades with back-to-back hit soundtracks. Frozen, released last November, has matched the 10-week reign of fellow Oscar winner The Lion King atop the Billboard 200, the last animated feature soundtrack to spend as much time at #1. The time span between the two albums’ chart runs is almost 20 years, with the soundtrack to The Lion King — which contained the Elton John hits “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle Of Life” — having been released on May 31, 1994.

Billboard points out that the Frozen soundtrack has now sold more than 2 million copies, easily making it the biggest-selling LP of 2014. In fact, no other album has even crossed the 1 million mark. This week the album added another 133,000 copies to its total.

Head below to see where every album in the Top 10 that isn’t the Frozen soundtrack landed.
