Hilary Duff’s “Chasing The Sun”: Listen To Her Comeback Single

40449ec3903d6c00715b675093d45a56 Hilary Duff’s “Chasing The Sun”: Listen To Her Comeback Single

Well, here’s one way to kick off the week: It’s Hilary Duff‘s long, long, long awaited comeback track, “Chasing The Sun”!

Backed by a simple guitar strum, the breezy return to form recalls Metamorphosis-era HilDuff at her most earnest and summer-iest. As suggested in recent interviews, the song steers clear of the electronic/dance sound of 2007′s Dignity, instead diving into “folkier-type” territory. “I’m chasing the sun/Won’t miss out on the fun, gotta get it while our hearts are young,” she repeatedly coos across the track.

The end result is something of a cross between Mandy Moore‘s Wild Hope, Sheryl Crow‘s “Soak Up The Sun” and Paris Hilton‘s “Stars Are Blind.” In short: It’s sweet, but certainly no “With Love.”

Listen to “Chasing The Sun” after the jump. What do you think of Hilary’s return to the music scene in 2014? Let us know in the comments below.

Destiny’s Child’s ‘The Writing’s On The Wall’ Turns 15: Backtracking

4d3c61f98d3d0bae27dd97507f6a2b21 Destiny’s Child’s ‘The Writing’s On The Wall’ Turns 15: Backtracking

Backtracking is our recurring look back at the pop music that shaped our lives. Our friends may come and go, but we’ll be spinning our favorite albums forever.

With the tremendous success of TLC and the Spice Girls in the mid-’90s, girl groups from all around the world began popping up like wildfire! Sure, there were acts like Blaque, All Saints, B*Witched, and En Vogue — but the biggest stars in town were the four young girls behind Destiny’s Child. The Houston, Texas-bred group achieved stateside popularity with their self-titled debut album, but it was their sophomore effort that propelled them to superstar status.

After the release of 1998′s Destiny’s Child (which went triple-Platinum), the quartet went back into the studio a year later and dug deeper into concepts of relationships and empowering women, themes that ultimately became the inspiration behind 1999′s The Writing’s On The Wall. Taking notes from TLC’s Fanmail (which was released just five months prior), Destiny’s Child formed this album as a “how-to” guide of sorts, as they taught women how to deal with no-good men and to go after what they want in life. Lead singer Beyonce had a heavy hand in the writing process, but all-star R&B producers and writers like Kandi Burruss, Missy Elliot, Rodney Jerkins and Daryl Simmons played key roles as well.

During this era, there were changing faces in the lineup, tension between members and their manager Mathew Knowles, and media speculation of them possibly going solo (we’re looking at you, King Bey). But throughout the drama, Destiny’s Child was able to create a solid R&B album that sounds just as fresh in 2014 as it did in 1999. In celebration of its 15th anniversary today (July 28th), we take a look back at a record that helped to inspire independent ladies worldwide!

While not completely a concept album, The Writing’s On The Wall is shaped around 14 “Destiny’s Child’s Relationship Commandments.” The girls interweave various mottos like “Thou Shall Not Hate,” “Thou Shall Pay Bills,” and “Thou Shall Not Think You Got It Like That,” which serve as the album’s theme. Kicking it off is the track “So Good,” a cheeky kiss-off to the girls’ haters that is written and produced by Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs and Kandi Burruss (the mastermind duo behind TLC’s “No Scrubs, ” Pink‘s “There You Go,” and multiple tracks on The Writing’s On The Wall). There is a thread of independence and confidence throughout the album, and it is evident that Destiny’s Child wanted to be a prime example for their young fans.

Following is the album’s first single, “Bills, Bills, Bills,” the ultimate independence anthem way before Survivor‘s 2001 single “Independent Women Part 1.” The song’s video shows the girls working in a sophisticated-ratchet hair salon (a tribute to Mama Tina, perhaps?) while they read their boyfriends for filth!

The visual also includes the unforgettable pre-chorus sung by Kelly Rowland: “You triflin’, good for nothing type of brother/Silly me, why haven’t I found another?/A baller!/When times get hard, I need someone to help me out/Instead of a scrub like you, who don’t know what a man’s about.”  YASSSSS Kelly — preach! “Bills, Bills, Bills” proved to be a success, earning the girls their very first chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as two Grammy nominations.

Destiny’s Child — “Bills, Bills, Bills”

Despite the quartet constantly throwing shade at the fellas, they were definitely not afraid to own up to their own relationship mistakes. The Missy Elliot-produced “Confessions” paints them in a different light, as they explicitly admit to cheating on their no-good men. Sonically, the track resembles the signature style of TLC (sensual lyricism, Beyonce singing in a low register a la T Boz, the hip hop-influenced production, etc.). But overall, it is a refreshing track that pushed the girls’ boundaries and helped to solidify them as grown women.

Other songs that seemed to be borrowed from TLC’s playbook are “Temptations” (it gives off a sultry vibe similar to CrazySexyCool‘s “Diggin’ On You”) and is the album’s second single, “Bug-A-Boo,” where Destiny’s Child have no shame in breaking down their men’s bravado. Looking back at songs like “Bug-A-Boo” is a bittersweet moment, as it was the last video that included former members LaToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson. But pushing the impending member shuffle aside, the fact that it is one of their lowest-charting singles (next to 2005′s “Girl” ) and the mentions of outdated technology like AOL, MCI and beepers, the song is a fan favorite and gets rotated on Beyonce’s solo tour setlists.

Destiny’s Child — “Bug-A-Boo”

The Writing’s On The Wall continues with a string of semi-standard R&B ballads based on love, with songs like ”Now That She’s Gone,” “Where’d You Go,” and “If You Leave” featuring late-’90s R&B group Next (how’s that for a one-hit wonder throwback?). But the album gets a jolt of energy, thanks to the club-ready single “Jumpin, Jumpin!” Produced by Beyonce, Chad Elliot and Jovonn Alexander, this buzzy uptempo embodies the futuristic synth aesthetics that artists were furiously experimenting with as they came closer to the brink of Y2K. 15 years later, it’s a definite must-have on any girl’s playlist before they head out to the club and “find the fellas rolling in the Lexus, trucks and Hummers!”

Destiny’s Child — “Jumpin’, Jumpin’!”

One cannot look back at The Writing’s On The Wall without discussing “Say My Name”! Undoubtedly the group’s signature song, it introduced the world to their newest lineup, which by that point included Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. This introduction was more awkward than seamless, especially when fans found out about the change during the video’s television premiere. (Fun fact: it was filmed shortly after the new members were added and they didn’t have time to learn choreography, which lead to an infamously basic video.) What made it even more of a messy version of musical chairs was that LaToya and LaTavia allegedly weren’t aware of the change and their original vocals remained on the song. Yikes!

But despite all of this, you cannot take away the legendary status of the song. It spent a staggering 32 weeks on the Hot 100 and is the group’s third best-selling single in the United States. From its flawless harmonies to its moody, 808s-driven production (thanks to Rodney Jerkins), “Say My Name” remains a Destiny’s Child classic that is loved by pop and R&B fans of all ages. It is so revered, in fact, that even Drake incorporated the famous hook into his 2013 song “Girls Love Beyonce.” (He has a thing for 90′s girl groups.)

Destiny’s Child — “Say My Name”

Aside from all the songs that dismiss the no-good men in their lives, the ladies of Destiny’s Child made sure to leave an important message for their listeners — especially their female fans. “Sweet Sixteen” is a heart-breaking yet relateable ballad that speaks about young girls who move too fast when it comes to finding men. The first half of the song is actually sung entirely by LaTavia, which is pretty noteworthy!

The Writing’s On The Wall went on to be certified eight-times Platinum in the States alone, and it gained not one, not two, but SIX Grammy nods in 2000 and 2001. It is also the fifth best-selling girl group album of all time, after the Spice Girls’ Spice and TLC’s CrazySexyCool, which goes to show just how much impact the record made worldwide. The album may be considered R&B, but it sits quite comfortably in numerous pop fans’ collections alongside classic chart-topping releases of that year like Britney Spears…Baby One More Time, Christina Aguilera‘s self-titled album and Backstreet BoysMillennium.

The album is representative of a nostalgic era of pure R&B that is currently getting lost in a sea of repetitive EDM beats and flaccid, uninspiring lyrics. Rather than drowning in fuzzy, computerized productions, Destiny’s Child used smooth instrumentation that highlighted, not overshadowed, their velvety harmonies and honest lyrics.

Soon after the album’s release, Destiny’s Child went up in the rankings as one of the biggest musical girl groups of all time. And all the effort, hard work and musicality put into the timeless The Writing’s On The Wall ensured that we’d still be jumpin’ jumpin’ to the ladies’ hits 15 years later.

Summer 2014 Playlist: 10 Hot Imports You Should Be Listening To, From Gorgon City To Mr. Probz

b08cd70979e314cd0b8b236cce8fff78 Summer 2014 Playlist: 10 Hot Imports You Should Be Listening To, From Gorgon City To Mr. Probz

If you checked out our spring playlist featuring the hottest imports from around the world, then you know that deep house is alive and well in the club and on the radio in 2014. In the months since then, a few of the cuts we featured in the previous roundup, such as “Hideaway” by Canadian singer Kiesza and “Rather Be” by Brits Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne, have gone on to be hits here in the States.

Now, deep into the summer months, we bring you even more tracks to crank up and dance to. From England to Sweden to Norway to France to Jamaica, it’s clear that the worldwide theme of the year is Get Your Ass On The Floor.

10. Lilly Wood & The Prick — ”Prayer In C (Robin Shulz Remix)”
This French duo first rose to prominence in their home country in the late ’00s thanks to both their cover of Santigold’s “L.E.S. Artistes” and their own catchy alt-pop tunes. German producer Robin Shulz recently reworked the pair’s 2010 lament “Prayer In C” into a breezy dance track, leading the song to top the charts in no less than nine countries across Europe.

And speaking of Robin Shulz…

9. Mr. Probz “Waves (Robin Shulz Remix)”
Dutch rapper Mr. Probz was looking to expand his horizons, and the first song he recorded after teaching himself to play the guitar was the ballad “Waves.” As he explained to Idolator recently, “There were like all these remixes and bootlegs out there. At first, I didn’t know what to do with it. Of course, it felt like a compliment for people to make something that is inspired by something that you made, so for me that’s like a pay it forward type of thing. The Robin Schulz version caught our eye when a UK label hit us up asking, ‘Can we please release a house remix?’ We were talking, and we were like, ‘Okay, if we’re going to do a move like this, that version makes the most sense.’ So, we contacted Robin’s people and decided to put it out officially.”

The result: A chart-topping single across Europe this past spring.

8. Jess Glynne — “Right Here”
You know British singer Jess Glynne from her featured vocals on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” and Route 94′s “My Love,” two of the year’s biggest house smashes. Her first breakout single as a solo artist is the Gorgon City-produced “Right Here,” currently a Top 10 hit in the UK.

And speaking of Gorgon City…

Nicki Minaj To Guest Star On Cartoon Network’s ‘Steven Universe’: Watch

c158c5a281da39f26a00a19e56ce89da Nicki Minaj To Guest Star On Cartoon Network’s ‘Steven Universe’: Watch

Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe tells a story of a magical boy learning to use his superpowers for good. Turns out, Nicki Minaj will star in a future episode to show the dangers of a power trip.

The “Pills N Potions” rapstress plays Sugilite, the menacing creature that emerges when two of Steven Universe’s guardians, Amethyst (Micheala Dietz) and Garnet (Estelle, as in the singer) decide to join forces. “I forgot how great it is to be me,” Sugilite says once the transformation is complete. Surprisingly, Minaj doesn’t transform her voice as she used to in songs, for her alter egos like the prissy Harajuku Barbie, the ever-panicked Roman Zolanski or his stern mother Martha — but she does sound ready to raise hell.

The episode, titled “Coach Steven,” airs August 21 at 6:30 p.m. EST. Preview Nicki Minaj’s cameo at TV Guide.

Shawn Mendes Streams Debut EP Sampler: Listen

17f576f0553296a4a73539eceb967f7d Shawn Mendes Streams Debut EP Sampler: Listen

Vine superstar Shawn Mendes has revealed a preview of his debut self-titled EP, out July 28.

Earlier this month, Mendes released the four-song EP’s lead single “Life of the Party” and became the youngest artist to have a debut single premiere on the Top 25. The Ontario native, age 15, started gaining attention last year by posting covers of pop songs — from Justin Bieber‘s “As Long As You Love Me” to Rihanna‘s “Stay” to Lana Del Rey‘s “Summertime Sadness.” Based on his EP preview, featuring 90 seconds of each song, Mendes has come closer to finding his voice.

In the breezy “Show You,” Mendes whistles as he lands on new ways to say “Haters gonna hate.” While at a party in the jangly “One of Those Nights,” he notices, but isn’t deterred by, drunk girls crying. All Mendes wants to do is live life for today. He often sings of that exact notion, and he even takes a bold exercise in storytelling for closer “The Weight,” where he imagines himself as a husband finding out that his wife cheated on him. While Mendes rose to fame via seconds-long clips, his EP shows that he’s gunning for staying power.

5 Seconds Of Summer Pose As Target Employees To Prank Customers: Watch

c2e38f39dcd5dde09a273aeefae35856 5 Seconds Of Summer Pose As Target Employees To Prank Customers: Watch

Australia’s 5 Seconds of Summer will likely sell big with their self-titled debut album. Just in case, though, the pop-punk band decided to pose as Target employees – complete with fake names – in an elaborate prank to boost sales. The band’s mission, according to drummer Ashton Irwin: “We’re going to be pretty much trying to sell our album to middle-aged men.”

Ultimately, 5 Seconds of Summer ended up aiming for a broader audience. The band dropped CDs into random carts. Guitarist Michael Clifford “helped” another customer search for microwaves by mentioning that they were likely by the CDs. Fellow guitarist Luke Hemmings told one customer that he smelled nice, before he placed a CD next to a child sitting at the DVDs section. (She pushed it away.)

Was 5 Seconds of Summer’s prank successful? Not exactly. Fortunately, the band likely won’t have to rely on such gags for long. First-week sales predictions say that their debut album is expected to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with sales just shy of 250,000 copies. Until actual sales numbers come in, watch 5 Seconds of Summer prank unsuspecting Target customers up top.

Hilary Duff Didn’t Know She Turned Down Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap”

0637011e873b4e9ea8e5363aca4f7090 Hilary Duff Didn’t Know She Turned Down Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap”

Charli XCX confessed last month that she initially wrote her hit “Boom Clap” for Hilary Duff, only to to be told it wasn’t cool enough. The news “crushed” Charli XCX, though based on a new interview, Duff sounded bummed as well. Turns out, she had no idea that The Fault In Our Stars single could have been hers. “I didn’t know that I had an option to have it,” Duff says to Popjustice. “It’s my favorite song on the radio right now.”

Duff does recall that while prepping her new album, plans to write with Charli XCX didn’t pan out. She has ended up instead with “folkier-type” music, as inspired by Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers. Meanwhile, Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” rose this week to No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100, making for her biggest solo hit to date. “If she wants to give it to me now, I’ll still take it!” Duff joked. Until they do work out a collaboration, here’s to hoping that the Metamorphosis star covers the song live.

Austin Mahone Covers George Strait In San Antonio: Watch

9e2b729f68b0606197c8347f70f1a83f Austin Mahone Covers George Strait In San Antonio: Watch

Austin Mahone took cues from ’90s boy bands (Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC) on his debut EP The Secret. To kick off his headlining tour, though, Mahone also decided to cover The King of Country.

While performing in his hometown of San Antonio, the pop heartthrob performed a faithful cover of George Strait‘s 1995 hit “Check Yes Or No” while wearing a cowboy hat that initially belonged to his father.

Strait emerged in the early ’80s and ushered in a new wave of traditional country singers – and inspired Mahone himself, as shown in a video unearthed by America’s Funniest Home Videos. In 2012, the show hosted a submission in which Mahone, age 3, pulls a cowboy hat over his head, grins at the camera and says, “I look like George Strait.” (He was close enough … Strait likely would have worn pants.)

Watch a grown-up Austin Mahone cover George Strait, then a young Austin Mahone do his best to look like George Strait after the jump.

Fifth Harmony performed a new song called “Reflection” while opening for Austin Mahone in San Antonio, Texas yesterday (July 25).

Like lead single “Bo$$,” this slick pop-R&B track sees the girls sounding subtly flirty as they empower themselves, standing in front of a mirror and getting caught giving themselves compliments: “Oh, I ain’t talking about you / I’m talking about my own reflection.”

Fifth Harmony will tour with Mahone, The Vamps and Vine star Shawn Mendes nationwide through September 9, as the group preps its debut album, due out this fall.
