Ok, just one more. We know, we know, we OD’d on remixes already. But really, can you blame us for posting the day’s most stirring cover of General Larry Platt’s call to action? Of course not. Especially since it was performed by counter-cultural (Canadian) idol Neil Young… er, yeah. Call yourself a cool cat and check below for the clearest sign yet that American Idol Season 9 is going to heal the world.
Honestly, we couldn’t think of a more appropriate artist to perform a song so important. Well, maybe these people. We’re just lucky that Late Night With Jimmy Fallon exists to call attention to deserving artists like Platt. (P.S. We love you Jimmy.)

American Idol served up a huge helping of Southern-fried crazy last night as the judges hit Atlanta. While searching for actual talent, we met Skii Bo Ski and Guitar Girl (no really, the girl was dressed as a guitar). Plus, Mary J. Blige’s super-fan turned out to be her super-security-threat. Then the heavens parted as the universe blessed us with the General, Larry “Pants on the Ground” Platt. Below are our favorite moments from American Idol Season 9’s Atlanta auditions — they are the GIF that keeps on giving.

Miss Congeniality, Keia Johnson, goes up the Idol elevator a hopeful…

… And comes down a golden ticket winner.

Kara and Mary J. Blige groove to Jermaine Sellers’ soulful rendition of “What if God Was One of Us”.

Simon grows a little tired of hearing the phrase “I’m here to sing for ya’ll.”

Christie Marie shows America how to do the signature hand gesture for Atlanta’s 411: The Show.

We couldn’t help ourselves.

Kara tries to feign tolerance. Mary doesn’t bother.

Try to attempt a Whitney Houston song, and this is what you get from Mary.
And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: PANTS ON THE GROUND!

“Get em up! Hey! With your pants on the ground!”

Randy can’t escape the power of Larry Platt’s flow.

This man is 62-years-old.

Randy and the General duet.

“General Larry Platt Out!” He might not be an American Idol, but he’s officially an American icon.

Snooki and her gravity-defying poof is here for another five minutes, folks. Sara Bareilles wrote a Christmas song about the classy ladies and gents on Jersey Shore set to the tune of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (as well as The Eagles’ “Hotel California”). She performed it during a concert in Los Angeles at Room 5 back in December, but the video just surfaced online, and you can check it out after the jump. Get your spray tan on, flex those abs, and sing along!
Sara tweets, “hi. i wrote a song about the Jersey shore. It’s on my website, and I’m apologizing now for the number of F-bombs. suriously. like a lot.” She ain’t kiddin’! But we’ll forgive her potty-mouth, since it’s all for the sake of art. The Jersey Shore cast, on the other hand, has no excuse.
Up next: an ode to The Hills cast set to Russian Roulette. Not the Rihanna song, the actual game. Seriously, shoot them.

If you’re still scratching your noggin over all the rumbling about The X Factor, why not check out one of the success stories to spring forth from the British series? Below is the latest music video from boy band—or as we say here in the States, male vocal group—JLS, who were the runner-ups to fifth season X Factor winner Alexandra Burke back in 2008. (Catch Burke’s latest, “Broken Heels,” here.)
The quartet follow up their U.K. #1 singles “Beat Again” and “Everybody In Love” with “One Shot.” Now, it’s a global recession, folks, so to distract from the overall cheapo nature of the clip, the guys twirl around amidst a cheesy laser-light extravaganza and the dude in the purple blouse bears his chest a little bit toward the end. Just FYI.
Along with La Roux, JLS are scheduled to perform at the London cermony to announce the Brit Awards nominations on Monday. Maybe if they wear tighter, more revealing shirts, they might even find themselves garnering a nod or two.

Mariah Carey is the latest artist to face the dreaded album release date push-back (though, really, this is nothing new for her). Despite the lead singles from MC’s Angel’s Advocate doing the rounds online already—the finger-waving “Up Out My Face” featuring the sassy raps of Nicki Minaj, and the smooth Ne-Yo-assisted ballad “Angels Cry”—the remix album has now been bumped back a few weeks, says her main fan site.
Is that a screamin’ Mimi we hear?
“Mariah’s new album Angel’s Advocate, originally scheduled for release on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, has been pushed back,” announced Mariah Daily Journal in a post today. “The new release date currently is Tuesday, March 9, 2010.”
Angel’s Advocate was initially set to go toe-to-toe with Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, but as Rap-Up now reports, that LP has been pushed back, as well (to March 16).
Now Mimi will have a diva-off with new releases from Monica and Natalie Merchant—that is, if the tipsy speech-giver’s record doesn’t get delayed once again.

Glee is up for a bevy of Golden Globes this weekend, but its hot cast isn’t putting all their eggs in one basket—your favorite Gleeks are using the hit show as a jumping off point for their non-TV careers: Matthew Morrison is recording a solo album, and Lea Michele (or at least her voice) is setting her sights on the big screen.
According to Just Jared, Matthew Morrison, up for a Golden Globe this Sunday for Best Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical, will release his debut album this fall through Mercury Records. Morrison spoke a little bit about it to Access Hollywood a few months ago, calling it “a classier Justin Timberlake album… it’s going to be me and a big orchestra, but also with beats.”
So, “SexyBack” with a big band? We’re definitely curious now. (Although we’d argue in Justin Timberlake’s defense that to release an album called FutureSex/LoveSounds without it coming off trashy is the epitome of class.) Just please, dear god, don’t rap on your debut album. We get enough of that on Glee.
As for New Directions’ main soloist, Lea Michele, along with Glee guest star (and Tony winner) Kristin Chenoweth will voice characters in the upcoming animated movie Dorothy of Oz. Lea will voice the ruby slipper-wearing protagonist while and Chenoweth will voice a new addition to the land of Oz, a character called China Doll Princess. Chenoweth previously originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Broadway’s Wicked, so she’s got some experience in the magical land of Oz. The movie has a planned 2011 release, but we can expect about two billion more Glee soundtracks by the time it’s in theatres.
As for the fate of Glee, it’s back on the air in April, and the show recently got an early renewel from Fox for a second season, which hopefully won’t include any pregnancy plotlines.

It’s been less than 24 hours since he entered pop-culture, and American Idol’s General Larry Platt already has his own Facebook fan page and an official website (which is still running in 2009, apparently). According to Idol Chatter, Platt got his nickname “General” for his heroic efforts during the civil rights movement—he even has his own day named after him! September 4, 2001 is Larry Platt Day in Atlanta for “his priceless and immeasurable contributions to society; and for other purposes.” We’re guessing “other purposes” include “creating the hip-hop anthem of 2010.” Behind the jump, groove to all the “Pants on the Ground” remixes we could find on YouTube.
Pants on the Ground Hip-Hop Remix
Pants on the Ground Auto-Tune Version #1
Pants on the Ground Auto-Tune Version #2
Pants on the Ground Club Mix
Pants on the Ground Funk Remix
Pants on the Ground Acoustic
Pants on the Ground Rootsy Remix
Pants on the Ground Slowjam Mix
Pants on the Ground in Technicolor (the Hype Williams-esque version)
But of course, as always, nothing beats the original.
Could Platt’s insta-hit “Pants on the Ground” be inspired by the 2007 campaign in Dallas for menfolk to stop their pants from saggin’? Even that resulted in a hip-hop song called “Pull Your Pants Up“! Who knew low-hung jeans would be the muse for such delicious musical offerings?

:: Here’s your recap of the Atlanta auditions in case you missed it, or just want to relive the glory of Skii Bo Ski, baby! [Idolator]
:: Ratings dropped from the premiere by 14%. That’s pretty normal, but let’s freak out anyway that this is the beginning of the death of Idol. [The Live Feed]
:: Everyone wants Simon Cowell’s job! We still think they should just force Madonna to do it, even if she doesn’t want to. Just tie her to a chair behind the judge’s table and watch her bitch everybody out. That’s good TV! [AP]
:: Perez Hilton and Simon Fuller are teaming up to create a boy band version of American Idol. Because O-Town on Making the Band are as popular today as they were in 2000. [MTV]
:: Ringer alert? Holly “Guitar Girl” Harden previously appeared on America’s Got Talent, and Jermaine Sellers, who nailed a gospel-esque rendition of “One Of Us”, placed 2nd in BET’s singing reality show Sunday’s Best back in 2007. Looks like they’re at least moving up the totem poll of reality shows. [Idol Chatter, Rickey]
:: The New York Times wonders if Idol should abandon its age limits. Don’t worry, X Factor will take care of that. [NY Times]
