When we recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the release of Daft Punk’s debut album Homework, we got even more antsy than usual for new music from the French duo, who haven’t dropped a studio LP in seven years. Happily, we can report that Daft Punk are currently working with producer Nile Rodgers on a new album. “We were just jamming at my house [in New York], but it’s gonna be proper and real,” Rodgers told music blog Faster Louder. “They came over to my today around breakfast time and it’s now evening I basically had to almost kick them out. We were having so much fun just in an informal setting that we decided to make it formal. And it’s very formal. It’s gonna be amazing.”

The 59-year-old disco legend continued to talk about his songwriting session and his relationship with the duo:

“It’s funny, I’ve known Daft Punk for some time now but we were never really close – we never got a chance to hang out with each other, we would just meet in passing,” he happily continued. “So today was the first chance we had to spend hours and hours together and it was just so awesome. Every track they played I just ran across the room and got my guitar and started playing and we were all dancing around my dining room having the time of our lives. It was something that was meant to be. It was interesting how Thomas said to me: ‘It’s funny Nile, it’s like we’ve completed the circle’. We’ve always just met, just had a moment to talk and then finally today we just said, this is something that has to happen.”

Nile Rodgers — who recently beat an aggressive form of prostate cancer — has created an impressive career writing and producing hits for a multitude of artists: David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Diana Ross, and most recently with Adam Lambert on his sophomore album Trespassing. He was also an original member of the disco act Chic, responsible for hits like “Le Freak”.

Daft Punk scored the soundtrack for 2010 film Tron: Legacy (which brought them into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 for the first time) and dropped a live concert recording, Alive 2007, but have not released a studio album since 2005’s Human After All.

The concept behind Ladyhawke’s video for her single “Black, White & Blue”, from her forthcoming album Anxiety, is based on the 1978 movie Eyes Of Laura Mars, which starred Faye Dunaway as a fashion photographer who can tap into the mind of a serial killer. As far as we’re concerned, the video is sorely lacking in murders and serial killers, and is swimming in awkward model dance moves. Katharine McPhee’s new TV show Smash, a music-filled dramedy about the development of a Broadway musical, premieres tonight on NBC, and she’s doing her best to make sure everyone — especially straight men — tune in. Even if it means hoppping into a bathtub and showing off her gams for GQ. That Kat, so generous! Head below for more pics (and video!) of the singer-actress in some red hot lingerie.

“I can understand why guys wouldn’t be into Glee,” she says, acknowledging the comparisons made between the two shows. “You know, that’s a pretty heavy musical show. That show does, like, six songs in an episode. We’ll do, at most, three.”

How else is she convincing straight men to check out Smash? By promising nudity! “What if I tell your readers that in episode five I take off all my clothes?” Wait, does that actually happen?! “I mean… no.” McPhee laughs. “But can’t we just say that?”

That would certainly disappoint many people looking forward to seeing the American Idol alum  in a variety of sexy, compromising positions. Good thing they have your GQ photo shoot to enjoy!

Most years, people watch the Super Bowl to see a bunch of men playing football. This year, a number of eyes are glued to TV sets primarily to see a 53-year-old woman in a gold Viking costume sing and dance — got a problem with that? (Okay, and maybe a few watched for Kelly Clarkson.) Regardless of which team emerges as the champ of Super Bowl XLVI, we declare that everyone who catches Madonna’s halftime performance of “Give Me All Your Luvin’” is a winner. If you missed it — or if you, like us, would like to revisit the magic about 600 more times — catch Madonna’s nipple-free Super Bowl halftime show below.

As you know doubt have seen by now, the “Give Me All Your Luvin’” video nicely incorporated the football theme (unfortunately, the Giants and the Patriots did not team up together to help Madge walk on the sides of any walls for this performance). For the Super Bowl, her Madgesty decided to go with a more grandiose theme and pulled out all the stops (a Trojan army, Zodiac-inspired costumes, a marching band, and a choir, to be specific) to perform “Vogue,” “Music,” and “Give Me All Your Luvin’” with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj — complete with pom-poms, as promised.

There was also a “Party Rock Anthem”/ “Sexy And I Know It” mashup with LMFAO and “Open Your Heart,” “Express Yourself,” and “Like A Prayer” with Cee Lo Green, before Madonna disappeared down into the stage (hopefully to resurface soon).

Nicki Minaj spent the past year more or less conquering the world (a rise punctuated by a Super Bowl performance with Madonna today). But on the new “Marilyn Monroe” (actual recording date as yet unknown), Nicki confides that she’s still battling insecurity and self-doubt. Is this her secret audition to take Katy Perry’s place on Broadway? (Or not.) Go blonde with Nicki below.

“Just call me blessed / If you can’t handle my worst / You ain’t getting my best / Is this how Marilyn Monroe felt?” she asks.

There’s speculation this track — in which Nicki stretches her vocals over a shimmery piano line — is from the upcoming Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but there’s no conclusive evidence one way or the other just yet. In any case, it’s an unusually confessional look from Nicki, and we’re curious to see how much of herself she reveals in her new music.

Madonna made sure she is all anyone is talking about this week, whether it was expressing her worth as a live performer, answering journalists’ stupid questions, or revealing her new video “Give Me All Your Luvin’“. But there was still plenty else going on — who did not get any luvin’ this week was Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul, who were unceremoniously 86′d from The X Factor, or Taylor Swift, whose exit from the Les Miserables cast did not leave many people weeping in despair. See what all the buzz was about in this week’s reader comments.

:: Sean commented on the preview of Madonna’s new music video saying: “I love it. Fun as hell. People complain when Madonna is too serious and they complain when she’s fun like this. I love both sides to her, incredible artist and this song sounds nothing like all the generic David Guetta wannabe dance songs on the radio. I hope it does well b/c Madonna is def missed on the radio and will always be the Queen.”

:: Stating he “totally agrees with all that Sean said above”, Dustin Farmer adds: “Glad that Madonna is back and I am loving this song! I’m always curious to see what Madge is going to come up with. This video is pure fun and anyone hating on it is obviously a negative nancy.”

:: Kerry couldn’t believe the news that Paula was fired from The X Factor: “This is just a rumor though right? It hasn’t been confirmed?” (Sorry, Kerry. It’s true.)

:: John didn’t jump to blaming Simon for the firings: “I bet Simon had nothing to do with this. Since the show has already been renewed for 2012, Fox probably stepped in and did what they felt they had to, especially since the show didn’t generate the ratings that Cowell wanted it to.”

:: Isaac Mitchell is partial to the slew of pink slips: “Bad Mistake to let Paula go, Nicole was a good decision and Steve the host, but not Paula! Xfactor will pay for this in the future!”

:: Speaking of The X Factor, MusicManDave loved Melanie Amaro’s new song “Respect”: “Hot Hot Hot. Melanie has the chops man!”

:: Salatiell Junior is supportive of Melanie, too, though he didn’t love her single: “This song is not that bad, but too repetitive for me. I think she’ll grow and better songs will come!”

:: Jessica on the other hand, has a different opinion by asking: “What THE HECK?”

:: With Taylor Swift not cast in the Les Miserables movie, Aarron can save his money to see TSwift in concert: “Well at least I dont have to see this movie anymore, more money for me! Would have seen this just for Taylor now its just another musical movie.”

:: Lily Tabolt was rather overjoyed that the pop star was no longer attached to the musical: “THANK GOD IN HEAVEN!!!!!! Taylor Swift would have been terrible in this role! Almost as bad as Joe Jonas in the above video!”

:: Nick also agreed, and suggested who he would like to see in the movie: “THANK GOD! I would never see a film version of ‘Les Mis’ with Taylor Swift’s rat-like mug stinking up the screen… Although I would have loved to see Lea Michele on the project, ANYONE is better than TaySwift.”

With most of the recent news surrounding The X Factor having to do with the pink slip parade unleashed upon half its on-air talent, we almost forgot about the woman who actually won the competition, Melanie Amaro. The singer, who is signed to judge LA Reid’s Epic Records, has a new single out, “Respect”, which samples Aretha Franklin’s classic song with an additional dancefloor beat and an overdose of synths. Listen to it below.

This is actually better than we expected. The typical debut single from an American Idol winner is something sappy, inspirational, and ballady. This is none of those things, shelving any sort of “This Is My Moment” emotion in favor of pure club euphoria. Sure, the tune could have maybe, I dunno, a verse or two, or stick to just sampling Aretha’s song instead of making it the entire draw. But still — it’s peppy, and doesn’t cause us any second hand embarrassment.

Melanie’s single will appear in her upcoming Super Bowl ad for Pepsi, which features Elton John. The singer discussed the concept of the ad with Entertainment Weekly:

I’m a singing princess warrior. [Laughs] And me being the singing princess warrior, I have to try to get the entire kingdom some of the sacred treasure, and the sacred treasure is, of course, Pepsi. I have to go through the talent part of the being in front of the king at his court [to get the treasure], and my talent was, of course, to sing. So I sing, I blow his mind, and I get everybody to have some of the Pepsi. I don’t think I’m going to tell you any more than that. I think I’ll let everybody wait until they see the commercial, because there’s some special surprise guests in there that I think everybody is going to enjoy.

It’s may be a bit confusing why OK Go agreed to appear in a Chevy Sonic Super Bowl commercial without one of their own songs playing in the ad — the track featured in the below commercial (with a Chevy Sonic performing “100% real stunts”!) is .fun’s “We Are Young”. But it makes more sense when you consider that most of the band’s footage comes from their upcoming video for “Needing/Getting”, which also features a Chevy Sonic. And we’ve officially said the words Chevy Sonic three (now four!) times in this single post, not even including in the headline. Well done, marketing geniuses at Chevrolet.

Most of you agreed with us that Taylor Swift would be extremely miscast playing Eponine in the upcoming film adaptation of Les Miserables. But it appears that the country singer was either replaced, or perhaps never even accepted the role. Broadway World reports that British actress Samantha Barks will be playing Eponine instead of Swift in the movie musical. Banks previously played the role last year in the West End production, as well as during the 25th Anniversary Concert filmed at the O2. See Samantha’s perform “A Little Fall Of Rain” alongside Nick Jonas below, and tell us if Taylor would have done a better job with the song. (We’ll save you some time: she wouldn’t of.)
