Candice Glover may have taken the crown on Season 12 of American Idol, but she has yet to prove herself on the charts — her winner’s single “I Am Beautiful” only just barely cracked the Hot 100 — so maybe she’ll meet with a little more success with her latest offering “Cried,” an absolute behemoth of a ballad, all soul-inflected and heartfelt. Indeed, it nicely evoke the spare R&B vibe of Glover’s inspiration Jazmine Sullivan — only Glover has her Idol platform to boot.
Still, it’s been a little bumpy for Glover — her debut LP, Music Speaks, has been pushed back twice now, and is currently scheduled for a February 2014 release, and “Cried” isn’t an obvious hit. Cross your fingers that it finds a home on urban radio and Glover can deliver some Beyonce-level bangers on this next LP — or at the very least, some big Jordin Sparks-style midtempos.
