Does that headline seem convoluted to you? Exactly. So here’s the latest on Beyonce Babygate: Oprah‘s best friend Gayle King is a co-host of CBS This Morning. On Wednesday’s show, Gayle King said that she got a call “from Team Beyonce” the prior night (June 4). King says Team Beyonce “basically” told her the star is “absolutely, positively not pregnant at this time.” King went on to add, “It’s a crazy rumor that started that they can’t seem to stop.”
Um, what?! OK, it may very well be a rumor. But it’s certainly not a crazy rumor. If you want a crazy rumor, talk to, say, Rod Stewart. The reason Bey and Jay-Z “can’t seem to stop” this particular rumor is because they keep doing these weird-ass secondhand denials. Jay purportedly emails a random radio DJ saying Beyonce isn’t pregnant again. Beyonce posts, then deletes, an Instagram message attacking unspecified rumors. Beyonce laughs at, but doesn’t actually address, the pregnancy reports. Some unnamed Bey rep calls Gayle King to unofficially officially deny the rumors. I’m not saying they have a responsibility to confirm or deny the rumors at all. But if you’re going to address them, then “Rise Up” and address them! Like, what even IS this latest denial?
“OK Team Beyonce, we’re going to nip this pregnancy rumor in the bud once and for all. How? No, we’re not gonna release a statement. This plan is much simpler! We’ll call Oprah’s bestie and tell her the crazy rumor is absolutely untrue. Why Oprah’s friend? That way, we won’t need to give a rep’s name to lend credence to the call, because, Oprah! Then we’ll tell the friend to pass along the gist of the conversation on her morning show, but we’ll make sure she doesn’t directly quote the phone call. And then, poof, rumor gone!”
Quite frankly, we don’t think Beyonce is pregnant, but the odd handling of this simple issue is starting to give us doubts. And doubts about her braintrust, too.
