Bebe Rexha needs to be on your pop radar. With an impressive list of songwriting credits and enough attitude to scare Pink into a corner, it’s only a matter of time before the 23-year-old breaks big. Still not convinced? Take one listen to her mesmerizing debut single “Comeback Kids”. It’s a euphoric raised middle finger to that naysayers that dared question her life choices set to some of the prettiest synths you’ll hear all year.

“This is for all the underdogs,” explains the voice behind Cash Cash‘s excellent “Take Me Home”. “It’s for the people who were told they were never good enough and for those who beat the odds.” While that might sound like an odd message for a 23 year old with the pop world at her feet, the budding diva has been on her grind for a minute — first as the vocalist in Pete Wentz‘s electronic side-project Black Cards and then as a songwriter for other pop stars.

The highlights? She penned Nikki Williams‘ breakthrough hit “Glowing” and co-wrote Stars Dance highlight “Champion” for Selena Gomez. Yes, this is the woman who had the nerve to submit a reggae-infused dancehall jam to Justin’s ex and somehow pulled it off. (Oh and she has a song on Eminem‘s forthcoming LP too).

It’s now time for Bebe to step into the spotlight and “Comeback Kids” couldn’t be a better calling card. This is one of the best pop songs of 2013. A smattering of ’80s synths rain down over the diva’s feisty yet sweet and hopeful vocal, while the lyrics put the haters in their place without sounding bitter. Anthemic is an adjective thrown around all too commonly these days but it definitely applies to the soaring chorus.

There’s something about the cute brunette that reminds me of Ke$ha — not her look or sound — but the fact that she is one of the few new pop acts to launch with a distinctly original point of view and palpable authenticity. That carries across to the feel-good video.

We first find Bebe reclining on the roof of a yellow cab eating a ice cream before we follow her shenanigans around New York. There’s lollipop licking, a tour of graffiti hot spots, some expert hair choreography from a speeding car and a trip to a fun fair. It’s simultaneously carefree and nostalgic. Much like like gorgeous song. Watch up top.
