‘Tis the season for giving away statues, pop fanatics, and one of the more interesting events on the docket each year is the BRIT Awards. (For those not familiar, in the most basic sense the BRITs = the UK Grammys.) 2014 is no exception, as the nominations announced today prove. “Pompeii” hitmakers Bastille are tied with Surrey dance act Disclosure with the most nominations — four apiece, including British Group, British Breakthrough Act, British Single and Album Of The Year for each. Meanwhile, Rudimental, who stopped by our studio last year while trekking across the States, earned three nods, including Group, Single and Album Of The Year.
Established pop acts like One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Arctic Monkeys and Jessie J were recognized with the 2014 nominations, as were newcomers like John Newman (up for British Male Solo Artist and Single), Passenger (Single) and Sam Smith (Single and Critics’ Choice).
Music icon David Bowie, whose UK Gold-certified album The Next Day was released in 2013, was recognized in the British Male Solo Artist and Album Of The Year categories. This gives him a reason to extend the celebrating, as Bowie’s 67 birthday just happened to be yesterday (January 8).
In the International categories, us Yanks will notice many of the usual suspects: Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Pink (International Female Solo Artist); Bruno Mars, Eminem and Justin Timberlake (International Male Solo Artist); Daft Punk, Arcade Fire and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (International Group).
The 34th annual BRIT Awards will be held at London’s O2 Arena and hosted by comedian James Corden on February 19. The lineup of performers includes Arctic Monkeys, Bastille, Rudimental, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding.
