DJ Mustard slowly but surely took over the rap game in the past two years, churning out brilliantly simple beats for everyone from 2 Chainz to will.i.am, and constructing much of YG‘s excellent West Coast opus My Krazy Life earlier this year. The only beatmaker with a bigger pop footprint right now is probably Mike Will Made It — but that could change now that Mustard has a JLo collab in the bag and potential credits on Rihanna‘s next album.
The L.A. producer is looking to capitalize on this momentum with his debut album, 10 Summers, leading off with “Down On Me” featuring 2 Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign. Ty $ does the heavy lifting vocally, and 2 Chainz jumps in with a verse built for the strip clubs. But the main draw is Mustard’s typically unobtrusive beat, which swirls and dives as hi-hats and handclaps skimming across the top of the emptiness.
