Actor Joseph Wiseman, the villian Dr No in the very first James Bond film, has died at the age of 91. Read more on Joseph Wiseman below.
Joseph Wiseman died at his home in Manhattan after his health had been going downhill, according to his daughter Martha.
Wiseman had worked on stage and in movies before his role opposite Sean Connery as Dr. Julius No in the James Bond film back in 1962.
Joseph’s last role was the 2001 production of Judgment At Nuremberg on Broadway.
Wiseman’s daughter Martha Wiseman told the Los Angeles Times her father viewed his role as Dr No with “great disdain”.
“He was horrified in later life because that’s what he was remembered for – stage acting was what he wanted to be remembered for,” she said.
Joseph Wiseman was born in Montreal in May 1918 and moved with is family to the United States when he was a child.
He started acting as a teen and did a bit part in 1938 on Broadway in the biographical drama of Able Lincoln in Illinois.
Wiseman starred in several shows such as Antony and Cleopatra to King Lear before starring in Viva Zapata! and The Unforgiven.
Later on in his career Joseph was on television in shows including Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, The A-Team and The Streets of San Francisco, before his recurring role as crime boss Manny Weisbord in the series Crime Story.
Joseph Wiseman’s second wife, choreographer Pearl Lang, died in February. Wiseman is survived by daughters Martha and Ruth.
