Though most of America probably couldn’t pick David Guetta out of a lineup, his name and brand is bigger than ever — and Simon Cowell knows this. In a sea of singing competitions watering down primetime television, Cowell will attempt to stray from the pack (that includes himself) and launch a show searching for the world’s best new DJ. “DJs are the new rock stars,” said Cowell, whose SYCO Entertainment will team up with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to produce. “It feels like the right time to make this show.” At least we know there won’t be any Beatles theme nights. Perhaps taking a page from Oprah’s notebook, Sean “Diddy” Combs is reportedly in the midst of creating his own music-themed cable channel. He plans to call it Revolt, and insiders say it’ll hit the airwaves on 12/12/12.  The entertainment mogul, who has his own alcohol and perfume lines, is certainly no stranger to new business enterprises — and he’s even more familiar with music television.

His rise to success in the ’90s is largely attributed to a number of dynamic, award-winning music videos, as well as his appearance on several seasons of MTV’s reality series Making The Band in the early 2000s.

Speaking of MTV, the “Looking For Love” rapper has allegedly pulled a few former Viacom employees onto the project, which B&C says will be like a more “urban”-leaning version of that channel’s early years. Does that mean they’ll actually play music videos?!

Many of our favorite stars shared kind, loving, and inspired words for Etta James on Twitter upon learning of her passing from complications of leukemia on Friday. Lana Del Rey isn’t letting a thing like abysmal reviews of her debut US television appearance and the fact that even she knows that people “shouldn’t expect much from [her] show” stop her from continuing to perform live. The “Video Games” singer told MTV that she’s already prepping a tour, tentatively scheduled for October of this year. That gives her about 10 months to figure out what to do with her hands while singing.

“Sonically, I always knew exactly what I wanted,” Del Rey said of her debut album Born To Die (out January 31). “That’s really the only thing I do know. The rest of it was sort of up in the air. I’ve been a writer for a really long time, and a sort of bad composer, but a composer nonetheless. It was something I did alone for some time and then became a collaborative effort as I met better and better people.”

We think she’s just trying to be honest once again, but criticizing yourself isn’t the best tactic when practically everyone else on the Internet (including the entirety of Hipster Runoff The Lana Del Report) is more than willing to do that for you.

Del Rey apparently has confidence we haven’t seen yet, as she not only will play a live set at South By Southwest in March, but she’s prepping a tour in the Fall. “I’m capping every venue at 900 [capacity], because I don’t want to perform for more [people] than that,” Lana said. “So what I want to do is do three nights in New York, at like Irving Plaza, and then three nights at the El Rey in LA, and then, in between, do 15 cities, and cap it at 900 venues. And everybody [at her label, Interscope] is onboard, so that’s what we’re going to do.”

But will 900 people even buy tickets if she continues giving live performances like the one she gave on SNL? Hopefully between now and October, Lana can find a reason for people to expect something from her live show — other than awkward pacing.

Yesterday no one could access Wikipedia due to the SOPA protest; today (and tomorrow, and the day after that, and beyond), anyone trying to download files through Megaupload will be disappointed, as the file-sharing site — which reportedly boasts none other than Swizz Beatz as its silent partner and CEO — has been shut down my federal prosecutors.

The Justice Department charges Megaupload with “generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and causing more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners.” Seven people have been indited today for online piracy crimes, and four of those are already in custody. Beatz, whose involvement with Megaupload was not publicly known until recently, was not charged.

Why was he not charged? It could be that his name doesn’t appear in the 72-page indictment, according to Forbes. So is he the CEO of the company, off the books? We have a feeling Swizz won’t be rushing to confirm this anytime soon.

After Megaupload was taken down, a few other sites got a taste of their own medicine — websites for the Justice Department, Universal Music Group, the Motion Pictures Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America were reportedly shut down by hacker group Anonymous. “http://universalmusic.com & justice.gov & RIAA.ORG TANGO DOWN #Megaupload Fight for Internet Freedom!” was posted on the group’s Twitter page Thursday afternoon.

Idolator, of course, does not endorse illegally downloading music or movies. But, for those intent on hearing the newest Madonna song early or grabbing the latest episode of Dexter online, we’re pretty sure they’ll manage to find another site able to give it to them.

Ah well. At least we’ll always have “The Megaupload Song.”
